We've got an issue here. It won't let me see the post. I believe you, but is there an archive version of this?

Edit: Here is the original article: https://www.404media.co/ice-and-cbp-agents-are-scanning-peoples-faces-on-the-street-to-verify-citizenship/

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 55 points 3 days ago

Archive link since that's behind a paywall: https://archive.ph/C7jJu

Exclusive: algorithm used by fascism app has been leaked!

[–] Skyline969@lemmy.ca 175 points 3 days ago (1 children)

And yet apps helping identify ICE agents are taken down.

Even China's facial recognition is wrong like 20-30% of the time

This is going to have so many false positives...

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 32 points 3 days ago (1 children)

This is going to have so many false positives…

That's the idea.

[–] FordBeeblebrox@lemmy.world 19 points 3 days ago

It’s the smartphone version of “I smelled marijuana,” bet there’s a setting to double tap a button and flag an offending person regardless of documentation.

I actually do not understand how some people find this unconcerning. This is like blatantly dangerous.

[–] naught@sh.itjust.works 77 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I'm just surprised that they didn't call the app Minority Report - I mean it's right there and so accurate

[–] arcterus@piefed.blahaj.zone 21 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Probably would have if it was made by Palantir, since they seem to have no problems with particularly on the nose names. Although tbh I'm not sure who made the app after searching for a bit.

40% of the population.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 26 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Dangerous? It’s outrageously illegal. Unless we’re just gonna say all documentation is null and void. Which. We’re not.

[–] SkyeStarfall@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 3 days ago

The state determines what is legal and illegal. It's mostly irrelevant in the discussion of the evil that a state does. Apartheid was legal, so was slavery, so was the Holocaust

The administration has shown they have less than zero respect for any sort of laws or precedents set by the past, and at this point whether something is illegal just blends into the background, as you could say they do illegal things every day. Dangerous is a more fitting term to provide a sense of urgency

Who would win?

An app connected to a server

1 itty bitty DDOS attack

[–] Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca 10 points 3 days ago

Error, couldn't reach server. Default judgment: guilty

Fascism: there's an app for that!

404 Media is journalist owned (there are four of them) and they’re doing some of the best journalism in the USA lately. I signed up about a year ago and don’t regret it. If you’ve got the extra cash and you actually give a damn about our broken media landscape, you could find a lot worse places to spend it.

This is analogous to drug sniffing dogs; the purpose isn't that the technique is valid, it's that is provides a plausible excuse for an action.

[–] hsr@lemmy.dbzer0.com 60 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Uhm excuse me is this app available in an official app store? Does this mean ICE SIDELOADED THEIR APP?

[–] lectricleopard@lemmy.world 38 points 3 days ago (2 children)

No way they could explain how to do that to these apes. Apple and Google are complicit in this, they like being able to bribe Trump. Probably just need to add their name to the list of people that can see it in the app store.

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 26 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It's likely a work profile type dealio, right? My last job you could activate the work profile and it automatically installed the work appropriate apps.

Serious answer to non-serious question, corpos can deliver apps to phones past app stores, e.g. intune/company portal etc.

[–] compostgoblin@piefed.blahaj.zone 53 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (13 children)

Fucking excuse me? An app is supposed to override my goddamn birth certificate? Absolutely not. In fact, I’ll be damned if I let a cop scan my face without putting up a fight. I’m walking away unless detained, and if I’m detained, I’m not doing a fucking thing until I have my lawyer.

Edit: Look up and commit to memory the phone number of your local chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, if you don’t already have an attorney’s contact information ready at hand.

[–] Wolf314159@startrek.website 27 points 3 days ago (2 children)

There's no due process anymore. Why do you believe you'll ever be granted a lawyer, let alone a phone call, or a court date? They're just out there assaulting and disappearing people.

You also get a court-appointed lawyer if you don’t have other options and staying silent in jail for a week is preferable to admitting whatever they want you to admit to secure a conviction.

Sounds like a visit from some hackers to make everyone legal is in order.

I really really really hope that when this is all said and done, every single one of these people face consequences. And we all know what consequences the people want.

Life comes full circle Nazis did genocide to Jews so now Israeli are enabling Nazis, while carrying out genocide of their own.

I want everyone to be speaking like this, so I will lead by example.

If they fucking try it, I will kill them. Then and there.

[–] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 16 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Doesn't mean a lot online, talking to a bunch of people who don't know you from Adam. Better to start speaking like this in person with your neighbors, preferably not in range of any recording devices. A single neighbor that knows that you're willing to raise up arms in their defense is worth more than any number of online strangers that you couldn't possibly help defend

On an unrelated note, the Second Amendment is not just for conservatives

The wording of "alien" is pretty disturbing in and of itself. Not illegal or anything, not "foreign", but "alien". Might as well just say "unwanted".

I think it "overrides" proof of citizenship because of the numbers theyre told to deport. A "figure it out later, but get the deportation numbers now" scenario

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 3 days ago

Yeah, in a way they're really just saying out loud the quiet part: that their job is to arrest people who "don't look right", quite independently of being an illegal immigrant, legal immigrant or even a citizen.

Having the "app" as an intermediary in the decision process is just a "computer says" way to isolate themselves from the responsabilities of what is in fact their choice (as the app was still configured/trained per their instructions so it's nothing but a computer agent dirctly or indirectly executing their instructions)

[–] Una@europe.pub 27 points 3 days ago (5 children)

Yeah apps are known to be 100% reliable and without bugs.

Tap for spoiler/sarcasm

[–] DeICEAmerica@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Won't it be super FUN when we use our own App to find them all and bring them to court to face their trials and sentences? I'm staying in super good shape just because...
