Just in case anyone's not sure how to find cool games on Steam:

  1. Visit Woke Content Detector
  2. Click "Not Recommended"
  3. Enjoy :)

For added entertainment, they sometimes Don't Get It and what they say is "subtle" is, in fact, right in your face.

e.g. they say Monster Hunter Wilds is "subtly pro-climate action" which is like saying a tungsten cube is "slightly hefty" or Life Is Strange is "a little bit gay"

(Tagged for NSFW for sexual content in review descriptions.)

This is beyond parody lmaooo

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

That list sucks. Every game is not recommended. These people are literally the most miserable people and have no games to play.

Reported the curator for offensive.

"This dude is like. Fuuuuuuuckin lame."

this is how i find out the metal slug games are on a deep discount

Wall-E game review:

Has obvious pro-environmentalist and anti-consumerist themes (hypocritical). Robots have arbitrarily coded gender with the "female" shown to be more "advanced."

This has to be a parody... right?

[–] Cevilia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 38 points 1 week ago

Poe's Law suggests that there is literally no way to know. The Steam discussions (I strongly suggest you do not venture into them) suggest a roughly 50/50 split.

No, they are that stupid

This is a real world example of why media literacy matters.

Most common reasons for being woke:

  • Gay people
  • Gay people getting married
  • Player can be gay or trans
  • Non-white people
  • Player is non-white
  • Strong women
  • Socialism

Their "non-woke" approved games include Bayonetta, Tropico, The Witcher, and Final Fantasy XII.

[–] Omgpwnies@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Bayonetta - the one where both the protagonist and primary antagonist are a strong woman with magical powers? That Bayonetta? The one whose soundtrack and art style was designed to be primarily feminine?

Also, I'd be willing to bet they don't consider The Witcher as woke because it has lots of nudity, with the male main character being able to boink a whole bunch of NPCs.

[–] BearGun@ttrpg.network 11 points 1 week ago

yea but she's hot, so clearly it isn't woke /s

By "Strong Women" I think they mean "non sexualised Women".

[–] EightBitBlood@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

100% couldn't agree more.

We have an indie game they declared "woke" because it has a non-binary main character. That main character is a half drawn stick figure. Never drawn with pants or a dress, or even two arms (they have just one).

But this half drawn childrens stick figures with no identifiable gender is too "woke" for this person.

Media literacy is indeed dead.

Edit: Name of our game is INK INSIDE.

I only found out about Kitsune Tails, a very gay Super Mario game with fox girls, thanks to WCD.

They truly are doing the gods' work. <3

OMORI

No woke themes or negative depiction of Christianity. However, the main character, Omori, is a "hikikomori" or "shut-in". According to Japanese government data, there are about 1 million such people, or less than 1% of the population. As such, NOT RECOMMENDED.

Woah, a minority? This dude is FRAGILE.

[–] kyoko916@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 6 days ago

Excuse me what??? Yime Nikki is literally one of the biggest entries for indie games, it inspired a shit ton of games like Ib or Undertale, and its protagonist is (alledegly) a hikikomori.

This people just can't play anything with a charac that is not normative huh, what a bunch of misserables

[–] jan_Melisa055@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

If they're going with that, then all games should portray Chinese and Indian characters only to not be "woke" since they're the majority.

They are doing it on a per-country basis. For example, they are OK with everyone being Japanese if the game is explicitly set in Japan.

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago (1 children)

imagine being afraid of the abstract concept of a minority.

such a specific phobia, must be less than 1% of the population.

Christians are about 30% of the population. white Christian male protagonist must be about less than 10% of the population, literally unplayable.

https://wokedetector.cirnoslab.me/ someone made a website that compares the list to your steam library

[–] RotSteinFinke@feddit.org 28 points 1 week ago

I just tested myself and burst out laughing. Apparently Surviving Mars is woke because the little models of the colonists are too diverse 🤣

[–] Cevilia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 23 points 1 week ago

Holy shit I think I might be woke

[–] cobysev@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

Only 619 of my games were rated, but my Steam library has over 4,000 games. Dude needs to review more woke games so I can get a better indicator of my wokeness level. 😆

By the way, only 11.55% of my rated games were not woke. 23.58% were woke, and 64.87% were slightly woke.

I'm definitely using this curator to find some good "woke" games from now on.

[–] froufox@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 week ago

cool, only 7% of my playtime and 20% of games are not woke

Elden Ring
Contains overtly pro-LGBTQ+ messaging. Uses body type in place of biological sex during character creation.

They only made it to the character creator. Nothing about the gender-changing Goddess, the way you can marry Ranni and she doesn't care about your gender or the way that no character blinks when you change your body type in the middle of the game.

There's also nothing about colonialism, racism, or genocide being portrait as being bad, but they aren't very media literate.

As funny as it is to meme on these douchebags. There are some disturbing entries.

Strange Horticulture
Slightly Woke
Contains subtly anti-patriarchy messaging. The npc Faye was raised by her mother who ran away once Faye's father hit her. 'Once is enough. When he struck her it finally broke the hold he had over her'

According to these people, escaping abuse is not okay.

On this website you can more easily search through the list.

Assassin's creed liberation: The player character is an improbable WOC assassin who fights to free slaves in French Louisiana.

As opposed to the totally realistic depiction of white male assassins in the franchise.

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (3 children)

As opposed to the totally realistic depiction of white male assassins in the franchise.

What white males? The arab, the native american, the italian, the greek and egyptian?

oh, the one that was set in victorian england? Also the many others I missed because I stopped giving a shit after 3 and they ran all their goodwill into the ground?

I love how murican white racism is just xenophobia. "White? But that person with a #FDEFE5 skin is from a Mediterranean country!!!!"

I considered joining the discussion on Steam with a big "Thank you for giving me all these woke games to play" post. But then I saw that you can only post if you join the Steam group.

I do not want that stain on my steam profile, so I did not do it.

If anyone else is already part of that group, please feel free to troll the shit out of them 😁

[–] birdwing@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Better to just be silent and use the list as a recommendation. If they got aware of us using the list for recommends to buy, they'd lock it or whatever.

Always check though if it's really "woke" or just something they don't like that's not per se gay/cool. If the makers themselves are indeed queer, chances are it's what we would consider cool.

A few games that I could recommend to anyone blindly:

  • Celeste
  • Hades (and also Hades II)
  • Fallout: New Vegas

These groups are so sad. Imagine all the cultural enrichment and great gameplay they're missing out on because they trust the word of a terminally-online doofus that huge swathes of games are dangerous to play because of their sticky psychological rootkit-like messages about not hating marginalised people.

GIRTHY (For Gifting)

The ideal gift for... someone, somewhere, presumably.

My favourite part of the detector is the multiple futa porn games marked as Not Recommended for "hermaphroditic sexual content".

[–] Cevilia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 6 days ago

Fun tangentially-related fact: when Weird Al performs Albuquerque live nowadays, he takes a break mid-song to apologise for using the word "hermaphrodite" and explain what he intended. It's the longest song in his repertoire and giving the band a break mid-song is very handy too. :)

They had to check, of course.

One of my favourite games (Transport Fever 2) was declared non-woke. I will hearby name every station after a Queer person, event, or thing. Not even God can stop me.

I follow Woke Content Detector to find great games.

Not Recommended that are fantastic, too name a few;

  • Hunt
  • Dredge
  • Citizen Sleeper
  • Not Tonight

A recommended game is simply based on not having "woke".

The best review is for Space Marine 2. https://steamcommunity.com/groups/Woke_Content_Detector/discussions/1/4763207947399842071/

The initial pitch:

-Your squad in this game consists of a black man and an Asian man instead of being all-white like the first. Clear DEI positioning. Two of the multiplayer classes is also black with no option to choose a different ethnicity, only to cover his head with a helmet and pretend he isn't (which doesn't count). There is no explanation for this. The Asian man in the campaign in particular treats the white protagonist with suspicion, though he comes to trust them by the end of the game.

-Main guard commander is female (a position usually occupied by males), but defers to the all-male Astartes. Mixed point since the main Guard character was female in the first game but wasn't a full commander unlike the Major here.

-The Imperial Guard present in the game also has women on the frontlines in combat gear.

-At least one of the developers is on record of having pro-woke opinions. https://boundingintocomics.com/2021/12/13/warhammer-40000-space-marine-ii-senior-writers-support-for-defunding-police-and-blacklisting-cis-white-men-sparks-concerns-over-games-narrative-creative-director-insists-team-will-honor-lor/

-The Warhammer franchise in general has been noted for going woke with the introduction of female Custodes, previously also an all-male faction.

Some counterpoints that I don't feel overwrite the woke sentiment but are worth mentioning:

-The enemies of the game are either inhuman insect-like monsters or humans who have fallen to worship of a god of change. While change may include a certain change (transgenderism), that mainly falls into the purview of another Chaos God in the lore that is not present; the game therefore avoids killing transgenders/hermaphrodites/what have you but that cannot be considered to make it woke on its own due to them not being present in the game at all.

-The protagonist is a white man, and so are his superiors. The Astartes are general are an all-male faction, but the recent decision to include other races when previous depictions were all-white with no explanation is a red flag.

Any addditonal points or opinions?

EDIT: Okay, so there are external lore factors I was not aware of. Thank you for letting me know.

I say leave it open in case someone finds something more definitive to mark it as woke, since there might have been something I missed.

The confirmation of why Space Marine 2 is "woke":

For the record, I've held off on adding this game until I get a better understanding of the lore. I don't know much about Warhammer 40K so trying to research this game has felt like venturing into a quagmire.

Every discussion I've seen about the diversity in this game has just been people arguing over the lore.

All that being said, this game will likely be added as not recommended.

Here's where I currently stand:

It seems to me there are lore explanations for why the space marines would be ethnically diverse. On the other hand, the diversity seen in this game appears to be improbably diverse (artificial).

The support squad (Valius's squad) has the exact same ethnic diversity as Titus's: 1 white, 1 black, 1 asian.

Unless the Ultramarines have a diversity quota for 3-man teams, that seems extremely unlikely. Even when you account for the large pool of recruits from many different worlds. If anything, it suggests the Ultramarines do have a diversity quota.

Furthermore, while there was a female front-line combatant who worked with the space marines in the first game (2nd Lt. Mira), she was a junior officer who became the most senior officer still alive due to heavy casualties. By contrast, this game features Major Sarkaana, a female officer who is not just a front-line combatant, but a senior officer as well.

Major Sarkaana is much older than Lt. Mira was, so it is possible she has simply been in war for a long time. However, this too is unlikely. Not only do these wars have extremely high attrition rates, they push humanity to the brink (hence the necessity of the space marines). I find it rather hard to believe a woman fighting on the front-lines of such a war would be able to (on merit) stay alive and rise through the ranks.

Possible? Maybe. Probable? I don't think so.

I'm still looking into the game so let me know what you guys think.

Addendum:

Major Sarkaana introduces herself as a member of the 8th Cadian regiment. From what I've read, the Cadian Shock Troops are considered the most elite members of the Imperial Guard. Without technological enhancement, I don't see how a woman could possibly be among the most elite front-line combatants of the entire Astra Militarum.
