Lots of respect for the people who initiated that and did all of the work canvassing and collecting petitions. Gathering that many signatures is hard even with an online petition, but doing it with wet signatures is super impressive. That is a lot of work! Heroic effort of democratic engagement.

Now the question is, will Danielle Smith call an election rather than honoring the wishes of half a million Albertans and risk going into an election after invoking the Notwithstanding Clause to override the Charter Rights of teachers and facing a provincial general strike by other unions that could spiral into a national general strike?
Why would she call an election? This petition didnt have anything to do with the teacher's strike, it was about AB remaining as part of Canada, in order to jump ahead of the vocal minority of separatists.
I read an article that said that if she called an election right now before the referendum is certified that it will derail this referendum question and give the whiney assholes a chance to get their question certified again. BUT...if Danielle Smith calls an election now to derail the referendum she risks going into the election with all of the unions very unhappy with her.
Please please call an election.
There's also the imminent rebranding of the Alberta Party into the Progressive Conservatives.
This is a good move, the Alberta Party is much closer to the old PC policy wise, the UCP is just the Wildrose embracing its worst tendencies.
That's 55% over the threshold! It's also 15% of all eligible voters in Alberta. Take that, Danielle Smith. And take that, Donald Trump. 51st state my foot.
Danielle Smith has clearly stated that she believes AB should stay in Canada. She's allowing the separatists to spout off and rattle their sabres a) for bargaining power with Carney in the short term, b) to allow Albertans to put this idea to rest once and for all.
Smith said her job is to convince Albertans that Canada works. https://www.politico.com/news/2025/10/08/alberta-premier-to-trump-stay-out-of-albertas-separatist-fight-00598068
"As most Albertans know, I have repeatedly stated I do not support Alberta separating from Canada. I personally still have hope that there is a path forward for a strong and sovereign Alberta within a united Canada." https://www.alberta.ca/article-alberta-next-albertans-to-decide-path-forward-for-the-province
Colour me surprised. Nearly half the signatures came after October 10th.
