How to repair jacket lining? (infosec.pub)

I recently purchased a second-hand leather jacket, and the lining has significant holes in it where the pockets are. This is because the pockets extend about 2cm further down then the lining would allow.

Naturally I would want to fix these holes and stop the fraying, but I'm not sure how I could go about this. I don't have any suitable material to patch it, and wouldn't want to cause further damage. Having a patch that dangles below the hem to accommodate the pocket is undesirable, but losing pocket space instead would be a bummer. I'm also uncertain how well I could attach a different material to the existing lining, especially with my limited skills.

It should be noted that there is still some material attached to the leather along the hem of the jacket, which could be used to attach a patch.

Any recommendations would be appreciated, as I've never had to do anything like this before.

I admittedly don’t care if I change how the inside of my clothes looks so grain of salt here: go to a thrift store and get a sturdy fabric that’ll fit enough. Then cut a bit more than you need, maybe a quarter to half an inch extra at the widest part. Go bigger if you want the extra pocket space but it will look baggy then. Stitch it up around the edges, it’s on the inside so I personally wouldn’t care about what kind of stitch/thread/whatever as long as it’s functional.

Just make sure to double stitch so you aren’t putting a ton of stress on a small area of the old fabric or it’ll tear again.

Alright, that's fair; it seems unlikely that people will ever look at the inside of my jacket, and I hadn't really considered going to a thrift store for material - there are plenty near me, so I could probably find some nice scraps somewhere.

My wife uses bed sheets for quilt backing sometimes and they are often $8 or less and very sturdy fabric in most cases. some see makers also sell the bedding in cases made of the same material, might also check a buy nothing sell nothing and see if anyone is about to trash one of those as well.

I would also simply patch it with whatever sturdy thing you can find. You could try to thrift something of a similar colour, I personnally like to get my patches from old jeans, but I also don't care what my clothes look like on the inside. Patch it much bigger thant the hole though, I can see that te fabric to the left is also damaged, you want to cover everything that feels a bit flimsier than normal.
For the pocket issue I don't see any good solutions. Maybe you could try sewing part of the pocket to smthg so it sits a bit higher? (not the lining, but if you can access the seam alowance along the zipper maybe ?

I wonder if you could take a button up shirt (probably best if it's a size up from the coat) and use that as a lining. I've never tried anything like that before, but I think it could work

That's a very interesting idea for replacing a lining completely! Maybe a satin blouse so it would slide easily over clothes. And turned inside out of course.

But in this case with just the two holes, I'd just patch it.

You could try to match the color, sure.

But I would look for a cartoon character patterned sock. It might need layered on top of a sturdier material.

To me this looks like an opportunity to have a little character peeking out of the inside of my jacket lining.
