A community for Cartographers with nothing left to lose.

Rules:

Don’t be awful Lemmy Guidelines Still Apply.

We are agents of chaos I’ve created this to be the alternative to the community I used to manage on the website that shalt not be named “mapporncirclejerk”

Live and let die Meme trends happen, so please don’t message mods asking to take down maps that are repetitive to a bit.

Reposts Vs. Covers Not all reposts are evil- if someone posts something that has been done years ago, it serves to bring old memes to the new users. I call these meme covers. However it can be done in excess which makes it a repost and spam. Mods will determine if a post is a cover or a repost.

No impersonating mods I can’t believe I had to make this rule.

No harassing mods on an appeal We can talk it out, and we will be acting in good faith when making decisions. If you disagree with a removal, you are free to message for clarification or to appeal by giving some added context.

Bans Bans will be set to a maximum of 365 days for humans, and a minimum of 365 years for bots. I believe people can change, so if you are banned for good reason, do know that it is not permanent, it is just a way to say “take time to grow and come back when you are ready”.

"Public School 153" sounds like it came out of Half-Life or something

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago

That's your cue it's in NYC.

I thought so highly of its education that I elected to make my administration here.

I think public schools in NYC are just numbered. There are so many, I imagine it makes it a lot easier to administer

Are they all one district? I thought larger cities broke them up...

Why did they stop and move to 61 without exhausting all the options?

Pike and Pine are both options? We could have had Pike Pike and Pine Pine in Seattle.

I grew up near Seattle, and I think only that could make it worse. There's no naming convention whatsoever, except east/west, which is the least important direction. Most of the suburbs use numbers, but again, they make no sense since half of them come from the city plan and the other half come from the county's plan.

Before I had GPS on my phone, I had to print out directions and even then ended up asking directions at a gas station more often than not.

[–] luciferofastora@feddit.org 2 points 1 week ago

As well as Pine Pike and Pike Pine?

This is probably my favourite joke in all of seinfeld.
Or the monologue from "The ~~whale~~ marine biologist", with the line of "The sea was angry that day my friends; like an old man trying to send back soup at a deli"

[–] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 11 points 1 week ago

[..] I could see directly into the eye of the great fish.

Mammal.

whatever.

[–] peteypete420@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago

Agreed, nexus might be my fav line as well. Certainly the most memorable for me.

I just watched it and it's peak 90s:

  1. Kramer calls from a payphone
  2. Kramer makes a collect call and puts his message as his name
  3. Jerry answers on the overly large wireless phone
  4. Nobody has a cell phone or any way to communicate after Jerry leaves

Nothing in this snippet would make sense today, it's glorious.

[–] lol_idk@piefed.social 23 points 1 week ago

Even more confusing if you want to meet at an intersection

[–] dualphasesaber@piefed.social 21 points 1 week ago (2 children)

it's a confusing system at first, but once you learn it it's actually not too hard to figure out where something is, because Queens is (mostly) on a grid system.

Pretty good write-up of it here.

This is really interesting. They needed a sub-grid within a grid of Streets and Avenues and so they went insane.

Absolutely fascinating.

[–] QuoVadisHomines@sh.itjust.works 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I knew this was Queens before I even looked at the map.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Public School 153 got me as far as NYC. :)

[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 11 points 1 week ago (4 children)

60th Ct? What's Ct for? Cunt?

[–] phlegmy@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 week ago (2 children)

You've never seen a court before?

[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The kind with a judge or the kind with basketball hoops?

But no, first time I've heard of it.

[–] phlegmy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago (7 children)

I think 'cul-de-sac' is the closest translation for yanks

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

We definitely have "courts" in the US

Like this one. My uncle also lives on a court as well. They're more common in fancier neighborhoods.

[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 2 points 1 week ago

Not a yank, or from any of the current or former british territories, but that one I recognize. AFAIK it means "ass of bag" in french, which makes me giggle.

Right? This is the most amazing discussion I've ever been part of.

I don't think I'll ever be able to pass a court again without impulsively telling whoever I'm with "You know they don't have those everywhere".

It'll be my new Aragorn's broken toe.

[–] obsoleteacct@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 week ago

It has never occurred to me that Court might be a regional thing. This is kind of blowing my mind.

[–] schnurrito@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I would guess, circuit? Or maybe crescent.

the list below says it might stand for "court", so a very good question indeed

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 1 week ago

We're at 60th and 60th. Take a left on 60th and take it to the second stop sign. If you see 60th, you've gone too far.

Meet me at Road and Street.

Oh, I'm at Lane and Drive. Be there in a sec.

[–] El_Scapacabra@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Lol, I used to live near there and recognized it immediately.

Queens is a silly place.

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago

why not 60-60?

[–] oascany@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Of course it's in a place called 'Flushing.' Who was memeing when making this place?

[–] last_philosopher@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

"We're near the public school."
"Which one???"

[–] Empricorn@feddit.nl 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Where I grew up they had certain streets end when they intersected perpendicularly with another one. Turn, and go down this other street and you'd eventually be able to find the original street continuing in the same direction, just not in a straight line. Named the same, too! Made trying to find a specific address before GPS and smartphones needlessly difficult.

Also, the font and size was the worst. You couldn't tell if '1 ST' was '1st' or '1 Street'. Same with '3 RD': was it '3rd' or '3 Road' (they had both separate streets in the same town).

That's in addition to 4th Ave intersecting with 4th Rd, like in this image...

[–] acetanilide@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

In my city, there are also things like "60th Road Place" and "60th Avenue Court"...the possibilities are endless!

[–] hamid@crazypeople.online 2 points 1 week ago

As soon as I saw the title I knew it was Queens lol
