Funny enough, R. Lee Ermey, who was an actual USMC drill instructor before becoming an actor, intentionally played the drill instructor in Full Metal Jacket as a bad drill instructor who went too far, didn't understand his core responsibility, and in real life would've ended up in deep shit once he was found out.
