From experience they pretty much never do groups like k pop demon hunter, where the connection is just that they're part of the same name of something

They've done like words from an expression or tongue twister, but I feel like I've only really ever seen the name of some movie or media property as a red herring. I feel like it's not abstract enough that the designers would go for it.

I've never heard of complex as a centaur, and a google didn't turn anything up, is that a thing...?

Had to go look at hints because what the hell are yellow and purple. Blue also becomes way harder since it's always all caps.

Unicorn wasn't fully written, so it couldn't fit normally with the other imaginary things that had the full words. I don't think I'd have thought of the double meaning of "i" without you pointing it out but I usually don't think about math much :)
