A beloved family-run grocery store in Florida may soon close its doors after more than four decades in business — and the owners say tariffs are to blame.

The trouble began when President Donald Trump’s tariffs took effect, shaking the foundation of small import businesses across the country.

They never ask in these stories - would this Trump supporter be continuing that support even after being kicked in the dick? That's the only part I'm interested in, because everything else these supporters talk about in these stories are things everyone with a brain saw coming.

They stand in front of the steam roller in Austin Powers and get squashed - would they do it again? My guess is they would, but I have to guess because no one ever asks!

if i was a business owner (which i never would be), in florida (which i also never would be), i would know to request that the interviewer leave that question out of the article, lest i add boycotts, vandalism, arson, death threats, etc to the money woes

Insurance clearly states it doesn't cover riots, protests, acts of violence, etc.

So the owner did the smart thing not to aggravate the real MAGA terrorists.

[–] Sciaphobia@sh.itjust.works 13 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I suspect you wouldn't say "you know, that guy threatening to shoot me in the face with a shotgun seems like the right person to protect my face" either, in fairness.

Some of the stories do ask. Every one I have seen or heard, they still support Trump. They are unhappy about the specific issue affecting them, but they still believe the rest of his policies are the best ones on offer.

I do not believe turning voters is viable. But discouraged, less enthused Trump voters are more likely to stay home next election, so I see examples like this as potential hopeful signs for our country's future.

Wong, who supported Trump in the last election, said he was swayed by campaign promises to reduce grocery costs. But now, as his business struggles to stay afloat, he admits the reality looks very different. Grocery inflation is at a two-year high, and prices continue to climb with no end in sight.

Guess he didn't believe him on tariffs though when he runs an import business.

People often seem to cling onto a single issue and never thoughtfully evaluate their full exposure.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

That's not even a single issue, that's not thinking when you are importing food.

if you can’t afford to stay in business perhaps it’s your fault, so pull yourself up, dust off, and find yourself a job. quit feeling sorry for yourself and acting like a victim.

..just giving MAGA cultists the same energy back.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 21 points 2 weeks ago

They can never comprehend that something is bad until it's bad for them specifically.

Oh no, is that my mom's friend? (no just kidding, but she does have a lot of friends/acquaintances that is pro-trump for some reason)

immigrated to the United States from Hong Kong

🤣

Hello fellow Cantonese speaker; You fucking TRAITOR, traitor to both your own fellow Cantonese people, fellow immigrants, and also, most importantly, a traitor to democracy and the working class.

So, as a Cantonese speaker and fellow Chinese-American immigrant, I wanna say:

仆街食屎屙飯死蠢抵死冚家鏟 。ROFL

I bet they'd support the pro-beijing camp if they were in HK. Bootlicker PoS.

they are disgrace to asians for shilling ofr a rich white old fart that is part of the "white rulling " class that has f'ed over asian for decades, do they realize all those stereotypes will get reinforced more, and they wont be seen as equals to whites, or even black, or latinos. i once followed some asian tubers that started shilling for trump other rich old farts during the pandemic and more or less loss a significant amount of thier viewership, what was left was incel asians, muslims who though the same things they did, plus parasocial female fans. additionally mysogynistic attack against a former female employee which extended to all former female employees that "divorced" from the channel which kickstarted the downfall. whats funny they also were using a token african american constantly bullying him.

He's probably going to get deported over a parking ticket from 1989 anyhow

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 20 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Possibly. If it happened before they got citizenship, and if they forgot to tell the immigration officer about it, they could get denaturalized, not even kidding.

Btw: "Legal Weed" is a misnomer, admitting to smoking weed before you obtained citizenship is possibly grounds for denaturalization. Laws are so fucking insane.

News at 8:

Gullible business owner conned by Trump for the 13,123 time.

"I just didn't think the 100's of years of data we have on Tariffs and what they do to business was correct when Trump said otherwise. My son is blind from staring into an eclipse because Trump said that couldn't happen too, and now I'm starting to think he might be wrong about stuff."

I liked it when cartoons were this dumb instead of reality.

(This is not a quote from the article. I'm combining multiple stories of people getting conned by Trump for comedic effect because it's the same story everytime.)

[–] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 31 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

Zero sympathy for the racist Asian who fucked himself. The Hong Kong Cantonese despise the CCP authoritarian rule, but they vote for a US dictator. WTF!?!?

[–] thatKamGuy@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Not defending the guy, he’s a moron for falling for Trump’s schtick and not following a simple chain of cause/effect - but I at least can understand the initial sentiment of wanting to support someone who claimed to stand up against “China”?

They just should’ve done a modicum of research to realise just how full of shit Trump actually is.

I'm sure Trump cares as much about these folks as he does about George Santos. I expect he'll be sending them a big check any day now.

[–] FunctionallyLiterate@lemmy.ca 20 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

No, see - Trump loves these people because they're even more full of foolish pride than him since they'll keep supporting him no matter how much he shits all over them.

Ngl the picture from the article goes hard. It looks like a scene from a cult favourite Asian movie from the 80s/90s

The more people burned by MAGA and the right means more people willing to hurt the right out of revenge. That's fine. The right has it coming.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 18 points 2 weeks ago

The silver-lining is that now he won't have to sell his business when ICE deports him.

[–] NoodlePoint@lemmy.world 16 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I'd like to know how long they were voting for GOP because as an immigrant family in a red state they thought by always voting for that party they expected stability and security while stiff-arming Dems and progressives as being disruptive. They never expected a gaslighting autarky-loving opportunist to destroy their business altogether.

I bet he's expecting the government to come in and save his business now too.

Hopefully he gets a box of extra bootstraps. If he isn't able to pull himself up with the straps he can at least live in the box before being arrested for being homeless and sent to a forced labor camp.

[–] crank0271@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

They're going to have to be domestically produced bootstraps and I just don't think we have the capacity for as many as we're going to need any longer.

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Guess they voted for the wong side.
