Kirill Dmitriev first posted about the idea on Thursday, suggesting a "Putin-Trump" rail tunnel could connect the two countries under the Bering Strait, which separates Russia's vast and sparsely populated Chukotka region from Alaska.

Asked about the idea during a press conference with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday, Donald Trump called it "interesting".

He also asked President Zelenskyy what he made of it, to which Mr Zelenskyy replied: "I'm not happy with this idea."

This prompted laughter from the US side.

Overnight, Mr Dmitriev posted on X, saying: "We have started the feasibility study of the Russia-Alaska tunnel six months ago.

And yet further evidence that Trump is a fucking idiot.

This has been a plan for a long time. There are 2 islands they were planning on using as midway surfacing points for car and train tunnels 20 years ago.

That would "reduce" the project to two canal-tunnels. Sounds do-able alhough I have not compared sea depths an types of the sea bottom which are more critical than length.

There's are documentaries on the project with 3d renders. Was a cool engineering idea.

[–] mcv@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Doable? It's still a massive project to connect one area where nobody lives, to another are where nobody lives. Start with a regular ferry first.

I wrote doable....not sensible

Sure they need this! Go for it! As long as they can put their name on it it's justified for them. Let's act as if there is no Russian boycot and their economy is okay. Let's pretend the usa has affordable healthcare an education for all citizens......

Ok, all politics aside, it would be cool to be able to take a train to Russia. Not that it will ever actual be possible in my lifetime. Wish the world was a good place.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

Aside from the political issues and technical issues, have you looked at what parts of Russia and the us would be joined? What would you do on either side?

To make it actually go somewhere you’d need to add a couple thousand miles high speed rail from the main parts of the us, including across places there are no roads yet, and n the Russian side like 5,000 mile high speed rail across Siberia (or I suppose a couple thousand miles to china

[–] P1k1e@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

Is this just some kind of reference to the ukrainian guy who had a gold plated train given to him by Russia in his mansion or some such insanity? I mean sounds VERY trump, but still redickyoulose

[–] florencia@lemmy.blahaj.zone -5 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Do it. I want this tunnel and I want it yesterday. Make it happen. Give us the plan. Give us the funds. Make both economies stronger with a direct train tunnel. Save your fucking legacy with some mega structure that actually helps people. I'll fucking re-paint "THE TRUMP TUNNEL" every other year on both entrances.
