Stuff actually did a breakdown:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/133113002/heres-what-christopher-luxon-could-get-for-60-at-the-supermarket

I guess his $60 is excluding restaurants?

Is this like when they ask CEOs about their 'mammoth' working days up at 5am etc when they count stuff normal people wouldn't like going to the gym, and lunch and travel time and so on.

I saw a comment on another platform saying this could be the budget of someone who eats out every night and doesn't count that spending as groceries.

The article quotes where he pretty much says he never cooks and just buys all his food ready to eat.

However, in post-debate comments, Luxon said his shop was for breakfast supplies and some lunch ingredients, and that he grabbed most of his other meals on the go.

His weekly supermarket shop seems to be breakfast food and occasionally something for lunch.

The only outstanding question is whether he has McDonald's every night or if he's eating at restaurants.

More importantly, do we care either way?

How else will we know if he's a normal everyday New Zealander?

You're the one fixating on a single remark.

FFS $60/wk is a little expensive for just breakfast and some lunch ingredients for one person.....assuming you are trying to be frugal.

Our total spend for all meals is around $250/wk for 5 of us, admittedly we make almost all of our meals, very little processed food in our diet.

Are you cooking together and buying in bulk? That really decreases the cost per person

[–] absGeekNZ@lemmy.nz 4 points 2 years ago

Well 3 of the 5 are under 10 so...

It's almost like he's quite wealthy or something. Why do we care? It's his money.

[–] absGeekNZ@lemmy.nz 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Because it's callous, he is either a complete cunt or completely out of touch. Either way not a great situation, it would have been very easy to say nothing....

It's absolutely incredible how wound up people are about this.

[–] luthis@lemmy.nz 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Because he is drastically understating the struggles that many Kiwis have. His weekly food spend is far greater than $60 per week.

[–] Ilovethebomb@lemmy.nz 0 points 2 years ago

He didn't say it was though.

Shades of "how much could a banana cost, Michael, $10?".

[–] eagleeyedtiger@lemmy.nz 5 points 2 years ago

He's been a CEO for more than 10 years, I'm not surprised he's out of touch with the average person

All the information you need, really. He's not claiming this is his weekly shop or anything.

He’s not claiming this is his weekly shop or anything.

That's exactly what he's claiming. It's his weekly shop, he just doesn't really eat supermarket food.

Clearly a pressing issue either way.
