So, I just got permabanned from the London Ontario subreddit for criticizing the police. The cited rule was trolling, but my comment was on-topic for the post and when I pointed that out, I was muted by the mods. This is the second Ontario subreddit to ban or mute me for critizing the police or criminal system now, and it's emblematic of the concerning trend of right-wing promotion on Reddit in general. A similar thing happened on the Ontario subreddit weeks ago when I was the only pro-trans commentor on a post and the comment deleted for calling a fascist a fascist ("name-calling").

I'm posting this here in case there are leftists or queer folks who are similarly punished for expressing their views on that site and question if they're actually breaking rules. If you're questioning switching off of it because it feels hostile, you are not making things up.

Volunteer moderators abusing their power? Never seen the like of it.

Lemmy uses the same system, weird place to pivot to.

/r/onguardforthee banned me for being anti-American. Same as OP “trolling”

I know. And Lemmy has the same problem.

I honestly think its biggest utility is as a replacement for Reddit. As much as I have always hated that site, it is an important way for people to access information and organize locally with relative anonymity.

Since Lemmy is mostly known as a Reddit replacement, it's useful to convince people to stop using Reddit.

Too many fucking idiot mods and admins everywhere, even Lemmy, do not actually seem to know what trolling is or means and just use it as a catch all term for "person I don't like."

If I say "Fortnite sucks ass" in a general gaming thread, that is not trolling.

If I said "Fortnite sucks ass" in the Fortnite subreddit, that would be trolling.

See if you can spot the difference.

I guess it is not inaccurate to label the London Ontario subreddit as a cop subreddit.

I got banned for calling out Israeli war crimes and saying that netenyahu needs to be tried and hanged for his crimes. I will not take that back. The whole thing changed my view on the death penalty.

I used to be 100% against the death penalty for any reason. What happened now is that I believe that the death penalty for major crimes committed under the auspices of the state.

What do I mean? I mean if you have a mass shooter or serial killer like Nikolas Cruz or the BTK killer, they get to spend the rest of their existence in prison. But if a soldier drags out a single civilian and kills them for fun, thinking that their uniform and propaganda apparatus will protect them, then I want a swift execution. Conviction and one quick appeal. No more than a few months waiting for their sentence to be carried out.

I mean, I'm not surprised saying something like that got you banned, criticizing Israel at all does that.

I am curious about whether you just mean they deserve to die on moral grounds or that this scenario involves some sort of legal framework that isn't already culpable in said genocides. Netanyahu has a warrant out for his arrest by the International Criminal Court, it is unlikely he'll face justice as long as the US dominates international politics. Even more, Canadian cops pull this sort of stuff all the time; Starlight tours still happen. How does this parse with legal systems, like Canada's, that depend on the genocide of indigenous peoples to exist?

Sorry for the delay in responding. I wanted to reply to this for a long time but I just kept forgetting.

I would need to speak with actual lawyers and people like that to make a real system other than what I have in my mind... but to keep things short, if a public servant, such as a police officer or soldier (enlisted or officer, but officers would be held to a much higher standard) does something major such as murder or human trafficking and does so with the expectation that he will get off on the charges due to him 'doing his job', then that would be treated very different than if he was doing a crime under 'normal' circumstances. A police officer selling drugs on the side for money should not be treated as anything other than a regular crime. Because I doubt there is any mechanism for them to claim 'I was just doing my job!'

For the situation you mentioned Canadian police and starlight tours... are they doing it with the full belief that their position as police will protect them? Then yes, fuck em'. Life in prison at least, and harsher terms than if a normal civilian did it.

For soldiers committing war crimes, such as the numerous examples by the IDF that need no mention here... as far as I am concerned, I wouldn't mind if they put them feet first into a woodchipper. Officers who order that shit or purposefully allow their enlisted men to do that shit would suffer even worse reprecussions. I don't just mean the death penalty for the officer, but also a lot of their properties taken away, meaning their immediate family would also be harmed... that is something that MUST be on their minds if they decide to do that shit.

As for commanders and high ranking officers and politicians who do this shit? Yeah, Netenyahu has warrants out for his arrest. But I would say that it needs to go farther, his entire cabinet needs to be wanted AND I wouldn't be above putting bounties on their heads if they decide to evade capture.

What was your comment? Reddit is gone, they don't want nerdy thinking people over there anymore.

[–] orioler25@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

I commented to say I did not want to have cops near me on public transit, then posited that people who want them there and labeled critics as drug dealers perhaps are not the people who use the bus and aren't very good people all around.
