A place to meme about the glorious ROMAN EMPIRE (and Roman Republic, and Roman Kingdom)! Byzantines tolerated! The HRE is not.

Unfortunately, that's the position of most slave revolts prior to the modern period.

The Roman Empire is Tron.

They just go around collecting people. If someone is useful they turn them into a soldier. If not, they get put in the games to die.
