I saw something about this a couple years ago. Hemp rope really is some tough stuff, so at the time that might have been similar strength of armor as covering yourself with chainmail, all before kevlar was invented (I think)..
Useful, yes. Practical, not really. Gotta give them an A for effort though, at least they were trying. 👍

For some reason this reminds me of the Russian soldier that died after asking his homie to stab him to see if the bullet proof vest would stop a knife.
It’s not exactly dumb, but it does seem like they could’ve tested the idea without a train.
Probably easier to just use a scrap locomotive than make something that replicates that.
I'd love to see some actual testing of this, I suspect it would work well against small arms and shrapnel.
