Dr. Phil McGraw's attempt to transition from daytime television personality to a politically aligned media mogul during Donald Trump's second presidential term has been marked by spectacular failure and financial turmoil, according to a new report.

Since the start of Trump's presidency, ex-psychologist and famed TV doctor McGraw positioned himself as an active participant in the administration. He became a firsthand witness to ICE raids, a critic of protests, and an ever-present volunteer for the executive branch — attending events like RFK Jr.'s swearing-in and appearing with Trump after the Texas flooding.

Dozens of employees have been laid off as it averaged just 27,000 weekly viewers, broadcasting partnerships floundered and, in July, it filed for bankruptcy.

He's not a doctor, they took that away.

Also, I think I hear the world's smallest violin playing a mournful tune just for him.

They took that away because he fucked a teenage patient. College kid came to him for depression, he gave her a job and had sex with her.

They were going to supervise his practice and let him keep his license, but he gave it up rather than submit to supervision.

There are a couple of stories of addicts on his show being offered drugs before they went on to make them relapse/seem worse. The show was basically an exploitation of people desperate enough to take public humiliation in exchange for mental health “help.”

I think he’s in part responsible for a lot of terrible attitudes about mental health - a popular understanding that “tough love” is a helpful approach, a refusal to acknowledge the impact of trauma… A general problem with America seems to be viewing TV show personalities as “experts.”

Where the hell is Oprah anyways?

[–] Netux@lemmy.world 59 points 3 weeks ago

Hiding in her plantation in Hawaii next to Zuckerberg. She didn't become a billionaire by being a good person.

what kind of loser does this at age 75 and doesnt retire with all their money?

[–] Windex007@lemmy.world 114 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Giuliani.

That fucking idiot could have lived the rest of his life as America's Mayor. Instead he decided to be a fucking joke.

[–] N0t_5ure@lemmy.world 64 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Narcissism gives a person an insatiable appetite for attention. Giuliani couldn't gracefully fade into obscurity any more than he could sprout wings and fly away.

The most dangerous place in New York is between Rudy and a microphone

Narcissism.

That is the cause of most of world's troubles.

I really hate that all these horrible people refuse to retire with all of the money they’ve cheated out of people over the years. Social workers retire. Teachers retire. Firemen retire. But apparently making sure as many people die as possible is so much fun it gives these ghouls the energy they need to keep going.

Aw! I love this for him! Way to go, Dr. Phil! I'm rooting for your complete collapse and fall into obscurity.

[–] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 42 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

No, keep him out of obscurity! I’m in obscurity and I don’t want that fucker here!

Put him in the past.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 27 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Please don't. I'm stuck in the past and he really doesn't fit in well here either.

Undeterred, McGraw quickly launched Envoy Media Company with Steve Harvey

The clown show carries on.

[–] boaratio@lemmy.world 69 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Oprah is responsible for doing so much damage.

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 31 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

yep she spread so much misinformation even before she gave those two quacks airtime. She's basically the female version of Joe Rogan

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 19 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

she gave those two quacks airtime

Don't forget the other quack "psychic surgeon" she did a segment on who turned out to be a serial rapist.

Good news: Nazi cheerleader goes out of business

Bad news: It's because there's so many Nazi cheerleaders in 2025 that they saturated their market, and (per the article) he failed for not being Nazi enough

Undeterred, McGraw quickly launched Envoy Media Company with Steve Harvey, proposing a "citizen journalism" platform.

Ugh, yet another Republican grifter ....

I'm shocked a man who exploited people going through crises decided to align with trump

[–] manxu@piefed.social 38 points 3 weeks ago

There is probably a pasture where Rudy Giuliani, Mike Lindell, and all the other (literal) losers roam. Dr. Phil can join them there!

[–] aceshigh@lemmy.world 35 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Remember when Britney Spears had her first breakdown and dr. Phil volunteered to help her and then he told the tabloids about it? Yeah. His current actions line up.

Been hating that bastard for decades.

[–] KelvarCherry@lemmy.blahaj.zone 48 points 2 weeks ago (6 children)

Dr. Phil is a really good example of the wider societal problem in the USA that created Trump. The fact that this man was allowed to have a prime-time TV show on mainstream network, instead of being universally shunned, was clear proof there was something deeply wrong with this country pre-2015.

This man's initial wealth came from running a membership scheme at a Spa; he then surrendered his license because he refuses to follow "Continuing Education" courses and follow ethics guidelines, so he could focus on his show of humiliating and mocking traumatized and mentally disabled kids; then trafficking them to plantations, on which he was involved with a reality TV show. Dr. Phil is a sick monster of a man, and by all means deserves everything horrible that happens to him; if not for being an ICE Nazi, then for abusing more kids than states' loudest pro-Trump pastors.

Well unless he's a total moron and not just playing one on TV he already made all his money from all the gullible people over the last 25 years so, why's he care?

Unless he pulls a my pillow guy he could just back into the shadows and live his life a lot better off than the rest of us.

(I did not read the article, just making assumptions)

There is not enough money to support all the grifters. Indirect proof that MAGA and other right wing movements are bots astroturfed by bullies and idiots.

Wake me when he's dead so I can chuckle at the thought of his corpse rotting. Right now I'm still amused by thoughts of Charlie Kirk decomposing but that'll get stale soon enough.
