Funny how looking at the face of some animals make people not want to eat them anymore, meanwhile it doesn't matter for others.

If you drew smiley faces on vegetables, vegans would starve to death

It's possible that plants feel pain, not necessarily the same way that we do but there's indications of chemical responses to damage and shared danger signals. And, well...

In a macabre turn of events, there's also evidence that plants can hear themselves being eaten. Researchers at the University of Missouri-Columbia found that plants understand and respond to chewing sounds made by caterpillars munching on them.

Plants exhibit sophisticated abilities, sensing and reacting to various environmental aspects, engaging in communication and complex interactions with other species. While some behaviors are instinctual, others might hint at a form of cognition. Calvo's work focuses on identifying factors indicative of cognitive behavior in plants, such as flexibility, prediction and goal-directedness.

Pain seems to be the mechanism that makes organisms avoid stuff. So it stands to reason that everything that grows and has to avoid stuff feels pain.

It's really interesting. I've been vegan for a while and for mammal and bird meat I've actually grown a disgust to just seeing it because the whole process they go through to get there flashes through my mind but while i also don't eat fish i don't seem to have the same empathy in me for them

Just go around putting coins over their eyes so they can pay the ~~ferry~~fisherman.

[–] Sas@beehaw.org 6 points 5 months ago

Does the fisherman carry them over a stretch of land to the eternal waters on the other side?

This reminds of me the time that I went out partying with some random people while I was backpacking. We all went back to the hotel room. The next thing I remember was waking up in a bathtub fill of ice and a little sore where my kidneys are.

Good times, 10/10 experience.

At the very least the fishmonger is involved in the ice setup, so I guess it’s not “nobody” =P

Stop staring at me with your dead eyes!

[–] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 2 points 5 months ago

It's usually not the people at the grocery store that kill the fish, it's been dead for a while at that point
