Actually, I wonder how light would interact with something that is infinitesimal in width, but does have a significant amount of depth. Have any experiments of this kind been done with graphene or something?

Interesting question. But I doubt that you could conduct such an experiment with graphene or similar, as the width of one atom is still a lot more that infinitesimal.

Technically speaking, the sideview would be an infinite thin line (and so invisible) or even no line at all as you can not rotate the view this way in 2D space.
Also, who says they are all 2D? Maybe they are fully 3D humanoids which we view through a pane of 2D projection.
