There's a point past which the numbers are meaningless. The prices reach the point where you cut off trade. Higher numbers after that are Nigel Tufnel going to 11: just not understand how things work.
Given military and geographical realities, the US was practically unassailable by conventional means. No problem: Just blackmail the nearest nonce into destroying the entire country from within. Job done.
