I think the frustration is finding an image that purports to have a transparent background but doesn't.
I think it could be either, and I've seen examples of both in the wild.
google images has a filter for transparent backgrounds, I'm sure a lot of competing engines got it too
You can tell the difference because real PNGs have a uniform background in the preview while fake PNGs have the tiles.
