Keeping up the proud tradition of hating Puerto Rico.

He's an American citizen. Like ... There's not even a way to plausibly deny that this is solely because he is brownish and speaks Spanish.

Laugh in the face of anyone who praises it

Pessimistic take: Given how much weird involvement presidents have always historically had with the Superbowl, I honestly just kind of assumed the Bad Bunny as "such a controversial pick" was intentionally meant to stir shit up for marketing purposes.

It provides the left with a feeling of control by knowing that people that buy into the outrage (see the recent cracker barrel controversy, that was mainly bot driven marketing) are triggered. Tons of people who don't give a shit about football (or even Bad Bunny) will now make a point to at least watch the half time show for the chance to see the right wing outrage machine being owned on a national stage.

Everybody who buys into the "this is a disgrace and I am personally offended and outraged" machine, (also more likely to be watching bc they care about football) can tune into the TPUSA half time show, and feel their own little slice of control. There's even a chance many of the sponsors of the TPUSA half time show will be part of a parent conglomerate that also owns the sponsors of the Superbowl halftime show.

Create a controversy and market to both sides of the controversy. Americans watch and spend money to support "their side," but it turns out that both sides are owned by the same people. Example, Dove might sponsor the Superbowl while Axe Body Spray will sponsor the TPUSA show. Unilever still makes money regardless.

Maybe I missed something along the way but what in the ever loving fuck is up with this obsession over Lee Greenwood from the right? He is not a generational talent and has absolutely 0 appeal to a majority of people.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 4 points 9 hours ago

The RW is not exactly known for their great taste in....well, anything.

[–] PapaStevesy@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago

I've never heard of them.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 5 points 14 hours ago

what in the ever loving fuck is up with this obsession over Lee Greenwood from the right?

They have almost nobody else to choose from. The vast majority of artists lean left (or at minimum lean away from the rightwingnuts).

Some racist guy that got shot, idk they’re butt hurt about it

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 6 points 11 hours ago

And an advocate for what killed him.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 4 points 13 hours ago

Be happy you don't know the name, be happy you haven't seen the shameful behavior of people world wide when he got shot, and I'm not even talking about people being happy about his untimely passing

A gumball machine all outta gumballs and the toddlers are tantruming in the store because mommy can't fit them all back in the clown wagon again.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said booking Bad Bunny was “a terrible decision,” suggesting that Lee Greenwood would attract a “broader audience,” despite the 1980s country icon boasting fewer than 500,000 Spotify listeners compared with Bad Bunny’s 80 million.

I kinda wish this would happen. It'd go down as the most disappointing Superb Owl half time show in history.

[–] ToastedRavioli@midwest.social 32 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

Who the fuck is Lee Greenwood?

[–] kadaverin0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 7 hours ago

Music for people who hate music.

[–] dan1101@lemmy.world 14 points 13 hours ago

He sang the "Proud to be an American" song, which is played at pretty much every 4th of July or other vaguely patriotic event in the south at least. But I can't name one other song he sang, and I don't see any reason at all to be proud of the USA right now.

[–] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 16 points 22 hours ago

Lol I am a Raiders season ticket holder, and since they moved to Vegas, the halftime shows have been superb. I've seen Lil Jon twice, Sublime with Rome, Ice Cube, and I feel like I'm missing a couple, but they have been for the most part, great. Lee Greenwood did one once, and first of all, I had to Google just to see who tf he was, then he was God awful. Out of pitch and just sounded like he was too old to still be performing. He played the proud to be uh 'murican song and finally fucked off. I hope Chudpoint USA hires this moron for their unwoke halftime show. It'll be a disaster.

[–] TemplaerDude@sh.itjust.works 39 points 1 day ago

Just blatant, bald faced racism. Just non stop racism from these nazi loving racists.

[–] NotSteve_@piefed.ca 128 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (11 children)

He's fucking American, I genuinely don't even understand their issue with him is. I get that it's just racism but how do they rationalise it without admitting its just racism? What are their talking points because it makes no sense

All American like Qatari air bases?

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 1 points 8 hours ago

Nitpick, it's not a base. And apparently Singapore already has one there.

I looked it up and it seems like Qatar might be able to help Idaho with it's issues with medical care for women. Apparently even with the absurd discrimination they suffer, health wise they appear to be better off than women in Idaho.

[–] Jarix@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

Why did Idaho matter here? Not from America so I can't understand why that particular state matters?

[–] otp@sh.itjust.works 21 points 1 day ago* (last edited 10 hours ago) (7 children)

What's the complaint? That it's not an American performing?

The Who performed at the Superbowl before. They're not American...

EDIT: Yes, I know he's American. I'm trying to understand what these misinformed people are claiming to be upset about. They're not even consistent, which suggests that they're BSing about their reason.

[–] Soulg@ani.social 4 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

The complaint is that he's brown and speaks another language.

[–] otp@sh.itjust.works 3 points 10 hours ago

I wish they would just admit it. If you have to lie about what's upsetting you, you should realize your reasoning for being upset is probably BS.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 27 points 1 day ago (2 children)

He is American. I still laugh at who the Squeaker of the House threw out there as a better alternative....Lee Greenwood, which I had to look up, because I never heard of him. Unlike Bad Bunny - I don't pay that much attention to pop music, but even I know who he is...

[–] otp@sh.itjust.works 3 points 10 hours ago

From another reply:

Yeah, I know. I should've made it more clear that I was attempting to get into their misinformed heads.

They don't know that he's American, but they're not even consistent. There have been non-American performances at the Superbowl before, so I don't even know what the complaint is supposed to be.

The Seven Mountain Mandate people sure are delicate little flowers, aren't they?

[–] Hermit_Lailoken@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Dominionists, is another way to refer to them.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

I find it's helpful to point out their supporting structures. They always go on about shadowy leftist groups like "antifa" that don't even have a freaking website, never mind any founders, any funding, any meetings, anyone in the group with any kind of platform or power or organization, etc....meanwhile, these assholes have things like Project 2025, ALEC, and the Seven Mountains Mandate stuff....
