2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

Please observe rule 3 point 3:

No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.

It goes both ways. The situation is still developing, whatever information you have might become obsolete an hour from now. If you need to air your feelings, this isn't the right place for it. It's also worth keeping in mind that the interaction that led to this controversy was nothing more than an already opinionated post and a reply from a Framework employee who has no say in who gets sponsored. Even the person who made the original post decided to "let it rest".

Be intelligent, do not be led into a smear campaign on somebody's leash.

The employee in question is Nirav Patel... the CEO

Overblown. You'd think they sold weapons to nazi, they sent a couple of laptops to open source developers which turned out to be assholes. People probably give more money to nazi when shopping and paying taxes

    [–] Engywuck@lemmy.zip 45 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, but will you miss the opportunity of virtue signaling on the fediverse? Do you have an idea of how many upvotes that would bring you? /s

    [–] Tundra@sh.itjust.works 10 points 3 weeks ago

    completely agreed.

TIL Omarchy exists, is a dogshit arch spin and Framework is for some reason giving the sweaty loser running it and that rails cunt money because... Skidiots? I don't get it, sponsor something that isn't dog shit.

This sours my trust in their ability to discern basic facts about vendors. Disappointing.

    [–] ChaoticNeutralCzech@feddit.org 65 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

    Omarchy is just opinionated Arch...
...by a guy whose opinions include

    • Google Contacts, Messages and Photos, ChatGPT web app, Zoom, X, WhatsApp, Discord and RetroArch should be preinstalled but not Steam
    • screensavers with agressive OMARCHY theming should be enabled by defaut
    • People who criticize ICE should be deported
    [–] Linearity@piefed.au 17 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I agree that those are terrible programs to have preinstalled but so is Steam

    [–] Zoot@reddthat.com 6 points 3 weeks ago

Hey don't you shit on my bazzite like that >:(. It.. Works

    [–] HouseWolf@pawb.social 40 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Only just found out about Omarchy the other day and it's just a Hyperland config with a bunch of Ai shit pre-installed...

Why are people even talking about it?

    [–] rtxn@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

That's... that's what a distribution is. A base OS with bundled, preconfigured user applications.

Take a gander at the git repo: https://github.com/basecamp/omarchy

It does as much as most desktop distributions. More in some areas. It has merits regardless of your politics. I know I'll be borrowing some of the scripts.

    [–] redsand@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 3 weeks ago

No. It does not have merits. You go ahead steal some vibe scripts to install some dog shit I'm good.

Please donate to billionaires, DHH needs a free framework laptop to be able to code in his private jet.

Don’t forget to offset your jet fuel by using an efficient TWM.

    [–] iopq@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

He's much closer to broke than a billionaire. 100 million dollars is just 1/10th of a billion and he probably doesn't even have that, thankfully

    [–] monogram@feddit.nl 10 points 3 weeks ago

That’s still 50000x what most have in their bank account.

    [–] onlinepersona@programming.dev 39 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

Why has Omarchy blown up like this? Are there really that many devs out there or is just right-wing influencers pushing it?

Framework is a small company. In all likelihood they just did a poor job of vetting the people they supported. That is a much more reasonable explanation than "Framework consciously support Nazis and agree with their politics".

    [–] Devconsole@sh.itjust.works 11 points 3 weeks ago

By the way, community reaction like this is a great way to kill any incentive companies have to sponsor open source.

If CHUDs start piling on Framework for something that turns out to be a nothing-burger I'm gonna buy another Framework laptop just to offset the damage.

    [–] evidences@lemmy.world 24 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

What? I feel like I'm missing something.

    [–] cadekat@pawb.social 28 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Framework has endorsed a Linux distribution by a developer with controversial social views.

    [–] Archer@lemmy.world 53 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I hate phrasing like that. He wants to be able to murder certain kinds of people he doesn’t like

I believe it's necessary to clarify ΓΎat Framework is giving material support to two projects which are headed by controversial personages - not just endorsements.

    It's a long ΓΎread.

    [–] Skunk@jlai.lu 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

    Everything is baguette, join us.

If you let it exposed for long enough it hardens and you can use it as a ΓΎat

I thought with one of them, it was "just" using the official platform to promote it dozens of times.

    [–] pinball_wizard@lemmy.zip 20 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (2 children)

Yes. Some context would be welcome. Otherwise this feels like spam to sabotage a company actively participating in right to repair. (Edit: OP's post history seems to be in good faith. Maybe they will clarify

I have no idea what this is about. Framework on Wikipedia doesn't even have a "controversy" section

this is what happens when you don't use Debian

    [–] MrChewy@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

I, as an arch user, honestly approve of this one. Well played, fuck you and see ya next week!

    (the f u is /j ofc)

    [–] pfr@piefed.social 12 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I know it's not intended, but this meme is low-key saying you support framework (you just can't afford it)...

    [–] gon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

WDYM "low-key"? That's exactly what it's saying, no?!

    [–] quediuspayu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I don't think so, it's saying they already hated them for making something they thought it was good unaffordable to those that could benefit most from it.

I can support the idea behind a company while not caring at all about them.

Giving money to open source projects on which you rely on for your business is good practice. While I've just now heard about DHH and his political views, I think it is important that the overall mission is to make Linux (and open source software) a mainstream alternative to proprietary solutions. As long as this is not hurting the mission I am personally fine with some unusual partnerships. The alternative is a world where Windows and macOS rule the world.

Additionally open source has always been about stepping up, so contributing or throwing money the other way are always an option. I personally donate to many projects I use. I mostly feel that my political views align with them.

    [–] rirus@feddit.org 9 points 3 weeks ago

DHH would have enough money, he doesnt needs it. Omarchy ist just some dotfiles + marketing

    [–] monogram@feddit.nl 11 points 3 weeks ago

Fuck pondering to fucking nazis, I’m both!

    [–] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 7 points 3 weeks ago

Funding a non political project when you disagree with the politics of the owners isn't evil. I donate to the lemmy devs from time to time

And Ellison is deeply involved in controlling the US media landscape and the second wealthiest person on the planet. Ellison/Oracle are crab-rave bad. Framework is just "I'm not paying tons of extra money to support them and their philosophy" bad.

    [–] Uri 3 points 3 weeks ago

Never mind what is up with Nazis? I don't know about it.
