Completing tasks in games? That's unheard of, I just jump between quests lol

I'm very fond of how video games let me go to bed, sleep exactly 8 hours and wake up fully rested. Also you don't need to poop.

Also, eating whole wheels of cheese doesn't make you fat.

Boss about to kill me? No worries, I’ll just panic eat six lobsters while I’m lying half dead in the corner.

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Is there actually a game in which you eat lobsters to replenish your health ?

My dude, only the best MMORPG-Microtransactioniest-Don’t-tell anyone-you-play 2001-graphics game ever, RuneScape!

I've always wanted to try something like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habitica

I don't want some dumb online-service though. I'd only use something that I can self-host, or something that's offline.

[–] VampiresOfDecay@retrolemmy.com 2 points 17 hours ago

I use Habitica currently and find it really helpful but it is a shame it's an online service

[–] bytesonbike@discuss.online 4 points 1 day ago

Wait, I swore you could self host.

This is an example: (not endorsing, just what I found)

https://github.com/ritiek/habitica-self-host

During the pandemic, my friends were finding ways to stay motivated and I definitely remember them spinning up their own server.

I've tried it. It's okay. I'm not using it currently because I forget to. Not sure how to deal Wyeth that part.

Excited to wake up to a new day, slightly confused, a bit of a hassle going on but there are some friendly faces around and I get to help those people fend off a dragon, everybody seems to be expecting great things of me!

...some months later I've lost the track of my life, no idea where I should be going, a long to-do list in the pocked I am sneak-archering through yet another draugr-filled cave, later I go pick up flowers and delivering notes instead of focusing on the big and important goals, what were they anyways? I seem to have ridden on this side path for too long and really need to find direction for my life. Everyone is waiting for me to save the day after all! I'll just finish this one small thing and get to it --

Applying D&D logic to everyday situationsmakes everything more interesting...that's for sure.

(Roll a charisma check. 9.)

You're an uncouth idiot. Leave me alone.

Okay but, umm, what's uncouth?

Socially clumsy and tasteless.

Sounds about right. I'm as bland as room temperature water that's been sitting out for three days.

I'm mostly there for the random whole roast chickens that restore my health.

[–] bytesonbike@discuss.online 2 points 1 day ago

Ah, a Costco enjoyer I see

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 day ago

Mmmmm... Wall chicken

To be fair, at least with a lot of games I play, the task is usually persistently displayed on screen and there’s either some type/combo of guided navigation, quest marker or glowing thing highlighting the thing you need to do/interact with.

Then again, I still get distracted with side quests/shiny things but much easier to get back on task when the information and optional guidance is right there

I honestly think this is why I find myself getting back in to WoW.

I played Avowed recently (GamePass) and that got me feeling nostalgic for it. I really liked Avowed. It reminded me of WoW (just the RPG elements, not the MMO elements) mixed with Fable.

Part of it is because I'd been out of it for so long and there's sooo much content to explore. And that they've made it so much more accessible to casuals. And the quests don't feel as repetitive as they used to.

But "here's a specific thing you need to do, go do it" combined with the occasional dopamine hit of getting a rare/epic drop, or a randomized rare upgrade, or levelling up...man that hits the spot.

[–] SoftestSapphic@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Also being given the resources and time needed to accomplish the task
