I had someone once put their seatbelt on when I asked, and then took it off again once I was moving. So I pulled over and said to put it back on, and keep it on, or get ready for a long walk.

The audacity of some people.

[–] SARGE@startrek.website 121 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I have sat for nearly 10 minutes while the unbelted person fumed mostly silently

You get one chance to put it on before I pull the car over and put it in park. In this case I turned the car off, pulled out my headphones, and started watching Lord of the Rings on my phone.

The best driver in the world can still get T-boned at an intersection or rear ended at a stop sign. I'm the one driving, you will abide by my safety rules. Take your own vehicle or ride the bus if you don't want a seat belt.

People really need to watch some crash videos with people without a seatbelt, you become a fucking projectile, I have seen one where two women are sitting in the back one without a belt and she slams really fucking hard into the other one that had a seatbelt, as in you can hear the head on head on contact.

For frontal crashes if someone is sitting behind you without a seat belt, they will literally crush you to death above a certain speed.

If you're going on a drug run, why would you risk cops by not wearing a seat belt?

[–] abbotsbury@lemmy.world 70 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Only break one law at a time.

Some people are just not very smart

I imagine most people doing a drug run aren't very smart...

Man, you can do that at 5 MPH and get a similar reaction. A few thousand pounds of car moving at 5MPH carries way more momentum than people realize.

Edit: 5 MPH is a brisk walk. If you've run into a lamppost or a tree during a brisk walk, then you should understand what I mean.

[–] Grimtuck@lemmy.world 26 points 1 day ago (7 children)

The weight of the car has no impact (excuse the pun) on the momentum of its passengers.

unless you find yourself between the car and a stationary object, the few thousand pounds of car has no influence here.

I do agree though that a human body traveling at 5MPH do carry way more momentum than many realize.

They actually did something similar with a bus (the large long distance type) when I was in school. Hard brake at walking speed, pretty brutal. IIRC the lesson was to brace against the back of the seat in front of you when there's an imminent impact/brake event, though of course you usually don't know beforehand.

My car does not move until all passengers have their seatbelt securely fastened. Gotta problem? You can fuckin' walk.

[–] doingthestuff@lemy.lol 41 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'll drive you with no seatbelt, hell I'll skip it myself if I feel like it .

But I won't do that while taking you to your dealer. Never commit a misdemeanor while you're committing felonies.

[–] swagmoney@lemmy.ca 48 points 2 days ago

only one crime at a time 👉😎👉

[–] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 86 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

"don't commit two crimes at once". I heard stories about a criminal gang getting caught red handed because they parked illegally. Imagine getting pulled over for not wearing a seatbelt just for them to find drugs

The greatest example is al Capone. Tax evasion is what got him for everything else.

If he had just paid his dues!

My car will YELL at us for not having a seat belt on. The faster we go, the louder the chime

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 20 points 2 days ago (6 children)

They literally make and sell just, standalone seatbelt fasteners, with no attached seatbelt, to 'solve' this 'problem'.

IMO, anyone who owns one of those should have their liscense revoked, forever, full stop.

[–] BigBananaDealer@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (2 children)

some of them also have a bottle opener which is super convenient

[–] lka1988@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

That's actually how they are sold to maintain plausible deniability. Like how single roses in gas stations are sold in conveniently shaped glass containers. Or vape batteries being sold as "soldering irons" with a shitty soldering tip that doesn't even work.

Point: it's not a bottle opener. It's a seatbelt bypass from the start. There are valid use cases for having one, like in a shop setting; but the average dudebro having one is a major red flag.

I have been the passenger in a vehicle where the driver didn't wear their seatbelt, and they drove 30 minutes down the highway with the chime going. I think he may have been partway deaf due to using power tools without ear protection, but now we have two data points in a trend.

Considering he was a smoker too, I wonder what his life is like now 15 years later.

The same people buy fake seatbelt clips to stop the warnings.

At least they are mostly just endangering themselves, as long as they don't turn into a projectile during a crash

[–] whimsy@lemmy.zip 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Also doubles as a bottle opener for all your alcohol consumption needs

After getting their way, I am not sure why would they turn around and go back home without accomplishing the errand...

[–] pulsewidth@lemmy.world 41 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They'd been taught the reason for seatbelts, then they had to learn a lesson about being disrespectful and ungrateful.

[–] 100_kg_90_de_belin@feddit.it 22 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If I'm driving your ass to buy drugs and I tell you to wear your seatbelt you wear your searbelt

Get out of my fucking car and walk.

Because they're a dickhead that doesn't deserve a favour.

[–] TheGiantKorean@lemmy.today 56 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

This is especially important with people in the back seat. I don't care if ~~thaw~~ the law allows people to sit in the back seat without a seat belt on, you're still wearing one. I don't need a human meat missile taking my head off if we suddenly stop.

[–] AtariDump@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago (3 children)

I don't care if thaw allows people…

Do you care if freezing allows people… ?

[–] Brunbrun6766@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Do we care to ask about sublimation??

I once did a hard break when a passenger decides to unbuckle (without need) before we arrived at the destination.
