Notice how when she gets hit she falls over the hood, does a little spin, and ends up sitting on the ground? It doesn't even look like her head hit the ground. That sucks.

But if this was any modern truck or SUV, and not a minivan, she might be straight dead. There's no rolling over the hood of one of those, it's just grill into face, back of skull into ground, and if you're really lucky it doesn't roll over top of you afterwards.

Yeeeeep

Modern SUV & Truck craze is just deadly to pedestrians and... All other vehicles on the road.

It's insane

This guy needs charges and the poor girl needs to get checked out medically.

How many want to bet he is a Mormon asshole and often drives in Utah county usa

[–] Aeao@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

How did we get Mormon out of this? Are there a lot of Mormons in Alberta?

[–] titanicx@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Yes there are quite a few Mormons in Alberta and a lot of them travel down here to Utah since it's a straight shot down here. We see so many Alberta license plates in Utah county, which is incidentally one of the absolute worst places to drive in the entire United States.

Wow, I can't wrap my head around hitting someone with a car and then berating them before driving away. Psychopathic shit. I hope they catch him.

[–] DrCake@lemmy.world 74 points 3 days ago

She didn’t even β€œcome out of nowhere” looks like the driver should have seen her crossing with enough time. That’s assuming he even looked up from his phone

When I was 5, a motorcycle run into me on the sidewalk making me do like a 720 spin while they crashed like 20 meters later. They immediately got up and started cursing at me before they took off when a Kiosk attendant got out. These people have no shame.

[–] M137@lemmy.world 19 points 3 days ago

Yeah, I've experienced similar two times. The worst time was a cyclist really staring at me as I walked, I didn't change my pace at all and would not have been in his way if he just continued his path and pace. But he did an awkward speed up then tried to break and veered into me, we both fell to the ground and got scraped up and he got so fucking mad. I didn't say anything, just looked at him with a "are you fucking serious?" Face, and that just made him even more mad so he wrestled with his bike to get it up then started walking after me trying to make me stop. But two other adults had seen it all and intervened, I was just an socially awkward and very skinny teenager at the time so I would have not done well by myself.

[–] buffing_lecturer@leminal.space 27 points 3 days ago (3 children)

I think his behaviour sort of makes sense if you consider how scary it could be for him (bear with me).

He's clearly in the wrong. He knows it. Especially in the court of public opinion; he hit a kid, walking to school. It's broad daylight and it happened at a crosswalk. It's not looking good.

Surely, then, it can't be his fault. Taking responsibility is not an option, it doesn't even cross his mind. If he lashes out, if he berates the person he hit for doing something wrong, maybe he can convince himself it wasn't his fault. Maybe he can convince the girl or the bystanders that it wasn't his fault.

I think this is also why people can be so opposed to bike lanes or other infrastructure that promotes mixed use of roads. When most things are built with only cars in mind, it's easier to blame a pedestrian or cyclist because they seem to be guests in a space for cars.

Gives me Southern Ontario vibes. Friends have been in the cross walk and when light turned green drivers aggressively accelerate to get you out of the way.

BC at least has a culture of pedestrian rights. You get near the curb and cars stop.

No one seems to be aware that the GODDAMN car does not have right of way in a crosswalk.

[–] varnia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 83 points 3 days ago (2 children)

This is so surreal: She just gets up and keeps walking, while the driver - who was either drunk or just distracted - tries to blame her for the whole thing.

I would like to see a followup on this story where the driver faces legal consequences.

[–] matti@sopuli.xyz 49 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I was hit by a car from behind in my early twenties. I sprung up after the impact to look for the person I was walking with. I had a few scrapes and a deeper cut in my arm but nothing that I even noticed for a few minutes. The next day is when that kind of impact gets you. For weeks after, taking an elevator or riding a bus would hurt. It took months to take any running steps. I feel really bad for this girl, it's a big deal even if she's walked it off at the time.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 1 points 2 days ago

I thought the same thing. She took a really serious hit! Kids that age are like cats - they just don't want to be embarrassed, so they just walk it off, and suffer later.

Hit and run Distracted driving Failure to report and accident

[–] birdwing@lemmy.blahaj.zone 105 points 3 days ago (2 children)

This guy should have his driving licence revoked.

[–] RenLinwood@lemmy.blahaj.zone 53 points 3 days ago

He should have his legs revoked

[–] maximumbird@lemmy.world 36 points 3 days ago (4 children)

He should have his ass kicked

Then his license revoked

I thought Canadians were supposed to be nice?!

[–] lengau@midwest.social 26 points 3 days ago

Fuckers like this should not be allowed to drive a vehicle. I am betting he was on his phone. That is only way I can explain why he didn't notice her until the last second.

[–] jimmux@programming.dev 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I've seen drivers look me right in the eyes and still pull into my bike lane. Some drivers just don't register anything smaller than a car.

[–] Malfeasant@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

It's because an oncoming narrow object (bicycle, motorcycle) looks stationary and/or far away. Weaving side to side is known to snap drivers out of their stupor.

[–] infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net 47 points 3 days ago

This kind of situation is probably not that rare. I know a guy who got rear ended at a red light by a minivan while on his bike. Broke both of his legs. While he's howling in pain on the ground the woman who hit him gets out, stands over him for a second, gets back in the car, and drives away leaving him there to wait for other aid. She never got caught. He guessed that she got out to help, saw how badly she had maimed him, and decided to flee instead.

[–] UltraMagnus0001@lemmy.world 59 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That girl is limping, I hope she went to the get it check out. Poor thing, just mining her own business to get berated and traumatized by some prick.

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 27 points 3 days ago

Article mentioned it's minor injuries, but seeing how she get flung off by the car it's definitely not just bruise, but probably nothing permanent.

[–] the_beach_lasagna@lemmy.world 15 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Why is it always Alberta seeing the USA as a role model when it comes to behaviour and mentality?

[–] EtAl@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago

It's the petro-curse is my guess.

A kid got hit on his bike in my community recently. I'm not sure of the outcome. What is the town doing about it? The local police are stopping kids and giving them fines for not wearing helmets...

[–] Eddbopkins@lemmy.world 51 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Omg that is insane that she just gets up and walks away. I see back and spinal, injuries, injuries on both legs. And possible damage to both arms. This guy needs his license revoked for life and this girl needs medical attention immediately.

[–] ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world 21 points 3 days ago (2 children)

From the article:

Police said they were dispatched on Oct. 2 at approximately 8:38 a.m. to assist EMS with an injured teenager in the area of Windhaven Gate and Windstone Road in southwest Airdrie.

Upon arrival, it was determined the teen had been crossing the street in a marked crosswalk when she was hit by a white Dodge Caravan, RCMP wrote in a release.

The 17-year-old sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision.

Police said the driver fled the scene, driving eastbound toward 8 Street.

So it sounds like she got medical attention pretty quickly and her injuries were minor, thankfully. Which is pretty remarkable with how fast the driver was going and how she went flying. But good news for the poor kid. I hope she gets a follow-up though, because sometimes injuries from these things can take hours or days to manifest.

Like you, I hope they catch the driver and he gets his license revoked, and also some charges brought against him. His driving was irresponsible, and leaving the scene after hitting someone is a really shitty move.

I know others were positing that because there's no audio maybe he was freaked out and upset that she got up and started walking away. But even in that situation who the fuck acts that way?! Maybe, just maybe... She was walking away to get out of the crosswalk and away from the lunatic who just ran her over. It sounds at least equally reasonable that as she is a teenager girl and got hit by an older male driver so he might fear for her safety and wanted to say least get clear of the vehicle and further danger.

Fuck sakes Alberta

[–] critical@reddthat.com 47 points 3 days ago (8 children)

And this is why we should have 30 km/h speed limits.

[–] errer@lemmy.world 19 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Looking at the video he does appear to be going that speed or less. Probably why she isn’t dead.

[–] apprehensively_human@lemmy.ca 19 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Which is exactly why we should have 30 km/h speed limits. The difference in survivability is massive at lower speeds.

If that was my kid, Murder was the case that they gave me.

[–] stevedice@sh.itjust.works 14 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Just a couple of days ago I had to bang on the hood of a car to get the driver to notice me. I swear to god they get stupider and even more entitled every day.

[–] beejboytyson@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago (4 children)

I've been in Alberta for a few weeks. Can't wait for this place to implode. Hate it here. A lot of self entitlement

Alberta

Mostly filling with redneck refugees from the south, looking for oil, avoiding the IRS and spreading their sickness to the rest of Canada. Like 'Murican entitlement such as not caring about pedestrians.
