Learned recently that the P-82 was powered by Allison engines, not Merlin.
It's a myth that the Merlin was vastly superior as such. The difference was in the supercharger, and when Allison was equipped with a proper one, it was competitive with the Merlin. The P-38 with it's turbocharged Allisons had amazing high-altitude performance throughout the war.
Apparently, when you first started flying this contraption, every so often the pilot would look to their right or left, shit a brick, and take evasive action to avoid a collision.
It took a while to get used to.
