Genuinely, how would it be any different to Twitter and Truth Social then? I've not used any of them so maybe I don't understand the distinction between each

TikTok is a short video social platform. People post only videos. The two you mentioned are short public messaging social platforms, with the capability to post/include videos.

That's not really what this is about, though. TikTok was not under their control, so they're trying to take control and follow their script of media and social control.

He isn't even trying to be an American president. Only to his lie-loving MAGA.

TikTok was never good. Have at it.

Though, he is always free to start his own MAGA-themed video service, much like he did with Truth Social. I think the problem is — and if he doesn't know it, he's been advised, with crayons and hand puppets — that running a server serving video is orders of magnitude more expensive than running a server hosting a text-based social network.

TikTok and Instagram were never good, but they provided a platform for people on the streets to provide real time updates on current events that countered the state narrative/propaganda on main stream media.

TikTok and Instagram exposed the truth about the American empire to a significant portion of the population. They want to make sure it's all controlled state approved content, they want to eliminate our ability to reach eyes and ears.

So sure, have at the Chinese propaganda platform, but not without an alternative that allows us to reach wide audiences... And we don't have an alternative... Not enough people are on the fediverse and the learning curve is pretty massive.

Another interesting news! I'm blessed! Like they already do missinformation.

Also a fucking idiot..

Good thing they don't have the skills to do it and make it attractive to the currect users. I'm fine with Larry Ellison's losing billions in the process.

[–] evasive_chimpanzee@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago (1 children)

They literally did that with Facebook. Yeah, plenty of people left, but it worked.

Man, I just thought about the AI deep fakes. I never had a Tiktok (and left any remaining social media a long time ago) and I applaud anybody who is jumping ship right now. But the brain drain is extremely dangerous with the AI stuff.

[–] REDACTED 2 points 3 days ago

Everyone has those friends who keep sharing you stuff from tiktok. I also happen to be pretty good with AI, run my own local models and all that (I know lemmy hates AI, but just for context..). The thing I've noticed is that by the each passing month, they keep sending me more and more AI generated or edited stuff, it's rapidly on the rise. If it has become so good only people with trained eye can spot it, how will tiktok look in 2 years?

[–] seanziepples@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

The AI videos are becoming very prevalent. If you didn't know what to look for you may not recognize it off the bat. It's wild.

[–] RegularJoe@lemmy.world 9 points 4 days ago

Hmmm... so when kids on TikTok vandalize their schools, we can now blame it on MAGA?

[–] Armand1@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

The perfect way to kill a platform

As if we didn't already know he was thinkjng that?
