The Pentagon has summoned military officials from around the world for a gathering in Virginia. Even top generals and their staffs don’t know the reason for the meeting.

This seems like exactly the type of gathering you want to avoid in a world where hypersonic missiles probably* exist.

* bring on the pedantry over what actually defines a hypersonic missile

[–] AbidanYre@lemmy.world 5 points 1 hour ago

Seems like the kind of gathering where you may want to bring a gun and sit near the emergency exit.

[–] Doolbs@lemmy.world 3 points 42 minutes ago

We're going to war with somebody.

And all the times I've heard MAGA tell me Biden and the Dems were warmongers.

But, I could be wrong. I always admit that.

[–] Brunbrun6766@lemmy.world 9 points 2 hours ago

I hope they all brought knives ala the Roman Senate...

[–] dogslayeggs@lemmy.world 71 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

There is no way this is a good thing. Summoning a single general to a meeting without giving any context is not a thing that is done. Summoning all of them and not stating the meeting purpose or providing read ahead charts or pre-briefs... that's incredibly ominous.

I'm hoping it is only him directing them to call it Dept of War (DoW) on all official comms instead of DoD.

[–] NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip 61 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

Its also ridiculously irresponsible.

There is a lot of discussion to be had over the actual value of a general in modern warfare (where individual soldiers have tactical value and so much decision making happens at the company or even squad level). But no discussion is required to say what a ridiculously juicy target "every high ranking military official" is and the massive damage to morale and organization that would ensue.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 1 points 29 seconds ago

What, with the current administration, is not ridiculously irresponsible?

[–] gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 42 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

Yeah that’s a lot of HVT in one area.

I wouldn’t be super shocked if this turns into loyalty pledge-a-palooza.

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 hour ago

That's my guess as well. "Swear a blood oath to King Trump personally or you're fired right now".

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 14 points 3 hours ago

"Ich schwöre bei Gott diesen heiligen Eid, daß ich dem Führer des Deutschen Reiches und Volkes, Adolf Hitler, dem Oberbefehlshaber der Wehrmacht unbedingten Gehorsam leisten und als tapferer Soldat bereit sein will, jederzeit für diesen Eid mein Leben einzusetzen.“

[–] KnitWit@lemmy.world 28 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (1 children)

My guess is about 1/4 are about to be fired for not being enough of a sycophant. Everybody is being called for two reasons; that’s how the corpo’s do layoffs now and, more importantly, as of right now the admin has zero fucking clue which 1/4 they are going to fire yet. That list is going to have more day of changes than a Vince McMahon era PPV.

[–] Bebopalouie@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 hours ago

If they do replace them they will be incompetent boobs who will screw up at every turn. Might be a good thing?

[–] Bebopalouie@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 hours ago

I am sure they will share it on signal again. If not it will get leaked real fast. These numpties could not keep a secret if their lives depended on it.

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 62 points 5 hours ago (2 children)
[–] CubitOom 32 points 5 hours ago

You could call it Pentagon Secret Pizza Service

Or PSPS

[–] redsand@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Do you deliver to Virginia?

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 8 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

I mean I'd pretty much have to.

[–] redsand@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 4 hours ago

Would you be willing to deliver to MD? Do your drivers have any drone experience?

On a completely unrelated note this post sponsored by Raytheon™

[–] rozodru@piefed.social 16 points 4 hours ago

I mean you don't really call in people from abroad to say "hey, war time" you call in people to tell them they're no longer needed and the others who are also called in get told about the "awesome" restructuring that's going on.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 45 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

Drunk texted them accidentally?

[–] elvith@feddit.org 5 points 3 hours ago

Don't think so, there was no journalist in the chat group...

[–] TipRing@lemmy.world 30 points 5 hours ago (3 children)

Telling them we are invading Venezuela probably.

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 25 points 4 hours ago

Or New York City.

[–] Skyrmir@lemmy.world 12 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

The generals in Europe wouldn't care if we invaded South America. He's doing something bigger. My bet is invading Ukraine, Russia, NATO, or the US. And I couldn't guess which one. Maybe more than one.

[–] TipRing@lemmy.world 11 points 3 hours ago

I hate that all these are legitimate possibilities. "We're doing a coup, so you will all be expected to do your part."

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 15 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

That could be an email. Bringing them in person is alarming.

[–] TipRing@lemmy.world 24 points 4 hours ago

Hegseth is a media talking head. He wants spectacle to garner viewership, so a dramatic in-person meeting would be the way he would do it.

[–] user_name@lemmy.world 36 points 5 hours ago

“Okay boys, who’s in on the second Trump self-coup? Also, if you say no you’re going to the ICE camps.”

[–] teft@piefed.social 27 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

If I were a general I'd be worried about some sort of culling a la Saddam.

[–] PhilipTheBucket@quokk.au 19 points 4 hours ago

Saddam was a hell of a lot more competent than this bunch. I actually consider it a significant blessing that they want to jump us over the cliff and into fascism, but they're in a Pinto that needs new tires, and they seem unaware enough that they are trying to make it work anyway.

Not to say it definitely won't work, I am glad for people getting out and raising hell about it. But it is a blessing that they are so stupid.

[–] Gumbyyy@lemmy.world 28 points 5 hours ago

That is seriously ominous

[–] CitizenKong@lemmy.world 20 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (1 children)

Trump is declaring war on the UN because of the escalator, starting the stupidest war since Caligula declared war on the sea.

[–] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 5 points 3 hours ago

Well Caligula won that war. Really showed Neptune

[–] Asafum@feddit.nl 24 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

"Ok everyone, we're here for a very important reason. Trump is pouty over his UN incident and we need to throw him a proper dictator worship party. I'm going to need all of you in DC pronto so we can really give those boots a good kissing. It's for The Good Of the Country™©®."

Sorry boss, best I can do is a warship party.

-Navy equivalent of brigadier general or above

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 9 points 4 hours ago

Well since we’re all here howabout a quick game of Frag the Drunk Nazi.

[–] HarneyToker@lemmy.world 7 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

There’s a government shutdown looming, who’s to say it doesn’t have something to do with that? Y’know, since their paychecks come from the government.

[–] MojoMcJojo@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

The defense budget is basically unlimited

[–] CobblerScholar@lemmy.world 10 points 4 hours ago

If the drunk loser wants a war he can go himself, maybe he can finally get some qualifying experience and get shot a few times by the Taliban

[–] unconsequential@slrpnk.net 6 points 4 hours ago

In construction we refer to this as a pizza party… pink slips to follow shortly. Hope you’ve been paying into that unemployment boys.

[–] roguetrick@lemmy.world 9 points 5 hours ago

We're resegregating the military.

[–] crank0271@lemmy.world 8 points 5 hours ago

Is it a meeting or a happy hour?

[–] FenderStratocaster@lemmy.world 6 points 5 hours ago

Looks like we're headed to war......with Kerplakistan.

[–] mrdown@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

Link to the leaks please

[–] riskable@programming.dev -1 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

I read the comments and first of all—you guys are hilarious 🤣

So I'm going to be that guy and tell the truth: It's almost certainly related to what's going on with Russia invading Poland (or at least violating their airspace) right now.

[–] HumanOnEarth@lemmy.ca 12 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

No. There is zero reason to bring all generals in person over last week's drones.

I'm of the mind it's either a mass firing (they already put plans in place to cut the top 20% or so of military command) with loyalty pledge, going to full blown war, or a favor to Putin to take all of the US command down at the same time. From most likely to least.

Edit: Something else occurring to me now, would be a great time for Putin to attack NATO with everyone flying back to the USA.

I swear to god America IF that's what happens, you're going from schizo friend who is currently psychotic to outright, full blown enemy. I mean that. Every last one of you. Unless you actually do something.
