Are the switches hot swapable?
I dont like how spilling your coffee/beer will break the keyboard and the computer.. woulld be better off mounting a pi on the monitor....

They should build a foldable one with an attached display, a mouse pad and a battery. It would be a complete, but portable workstation! Wouldn't that be nice?

You've just invented the laptop

[–] Lumisal@lemmy.world 4 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Nonono, it'll be called a Lightweight Advanced Processor Technology Optimized for Performance

[–] thann@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

And its extremly proprietary

A raspberry laptop would be really nice. Like a laptop that allowed every component to be replaced continuously. Need more computing power? Change the pi board for a newer one. Broken screen? Change it. Battery gone bad? Replace it.

It would be like the the Theseus ship!

Also fully repairable and more environmental friendly

That's called a Framework laptop

[–] fading_person@lemmy.zip 2 points 6 hours ago

Never heard of them. Are future motherboards guaranteed to be compatible?

Trying to think through a use case for this… just for tinkering around?

[–] RunningInRVA@lemmy.world 5 points 9 hours ago

I bought the 400 version of this device for like $100 as my son’s first computer. I think he was 6 when I gave it to him. Of course now we have upgraded him to a Mac mini as he needed a more capable machine now that he has gotten interested in 3d modeling. It’s a good little machine for the right use case.

a use case for this

It makes you look like a person who'd buy a Pi 500+. Which is ironic, because I see one such person every day when I look in the mirror and I don't have a Pi 500+.

[–] RagnarokOnline@programming.dev 2 points 11 hours ago

Unfortunately, I am not cool enough to have a Pi 500+.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Back in the days I had a RPi2B(!) linked to the living room TV for browsing the web. I'm really thinking of buying a 500+, as I do have use cases. I could use a remote desktop on it to display maps on the big screen from my laptop for D&D gaming, for example.

[–] RagnarokOnline@programming.dev 3 points 8 hours ago

Ya know, I do love the idea of having a convenient little keyboard that’s connected to the tv. Put that bad boy right next to the couch and hook a chrome cast up to it and it’d be golden. Really cool idea!

[–] Nighed@feddit.uk 4 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

I guess that if you have a usb-c monitor in multiple locations, you can just carry a keyboard and mouse....

Cool, but not sure if it's useful. Someone will buy it though.

It doesnt support USBC video output so its a really lame device imo. I just want a single cable solution ffs, why are there so few SBCs that do this.

[–] cmnybo@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 12 hours ago (3 children)

Everything I can think of would be better served by a laptop or a mini PC.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 5 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

If you want something for your kids that runs Linux out of the box, it might be a good option.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 4 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

The regular 500 for $90 would be a good option for kids, but this 500+ for $200 comes at way too high a price premium over it to justify IMO.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

Well, if I had kids, I'd buy them this one.

If you want to use glasses as a monitor replacement, that sort of form factor is one possible outcome. Someone did a PC with that as a display, and IIRC it kinda looked like that.

kagis

Spacetop:

Like you, I kind of prefer the idea of separating the keyboard from the rest of the PC if you're doing that. Just use a carrying case/backpack/whatever and plug and take the cables out when setting up. But if you place a premium on setup time and portability, if you're very frequently popping the thing open and shut, I suppose it's not unreasonable. I mean, we could theoretically also have a mini PC plus portable display plus keyboard form factor, and yet, that's much less popular than the laptop form factor.

[–] incompetent@programming.dev 3 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Sorry for the off-topic question but I'm curious. I have seen people say "kagis" in a comment a few times in the past and I tried looking it up to see what it means but found irrelevant results. What does it mean in this context? Thanks in advance!

[–] tal@olio.cafe 3 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

"googles" -> searches with Google search engine

"kagis" -> searches with Kagi search engine

[–] incompetent@programming.dev 3 points 5 hours ago

Thanks again. When I come across a word I don't know I like to look it up to learn it. That one has been bugging me for a while.

[–] Nighed@feddit.uk 3 points 12 hours ago

My office uses hot desking. You get a monitor, with a usb-C docking station with a cheap dell mouse and keyboard.

I could see this working in that situation if you want a good keyboard/mouse. You can't easily take it to a meeting room to take notes though....

Will it be upgradeable with newer boards? because if not, nope. boards can be repurposed for lighter tasks when they are superseeded, but in this case the large format is a very limiting factor.
