Did RFK cough it out? Or does it spread anally? That way tRump would already have it!

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 hours ago

So move RFK 100 miles away.

However, in the 1950s, eradication efforts using sterile male flies and livestock monitoring began to push the fly population southward.

Then..

"It nearly wiped out our cattle industry before; we need to act forcefully now. That’s why I insist we start using pesticide bait immediately."

Is there a reason we wouldn't use sterile male flies before it even gets here? Or, you know, just keep them in international circulation?

Edit: Honest question, not snarky. I'm ignorant here.

Grain of salt, but I’m pretty sure I saw this exact “wasteful science,” or at least this type of it, under attack by this administration/the DOGE machete, so that’d be why. Inability to think/connect dots and adamant anti science dogma.

I literally just spit some drink out my nose when I opened this thread and saw this.

~Thank you.~

[–] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 13 points 14 hours ago

A spit-take a day keeps the brain worm away.

You're welcome.

Federal Fish and wildlife are killing off endangered wolves in new mexico to protect cattle. Sincerely as a person who appreciates the planet we live on I hope cattle ranchers have the life they voted for!

It's so great to be at the end of human cooperation and civilization. I'm so excited for when antibiotics stop working because of factory farming. /s

[–] FenderStratocaster@lemmy.world 7 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago) (2 children)

Stop spreading panic.

While NWS can infect humans—and those cases are grisly—it is relatively rare.

The US has halted imports of cattle, bison, and horses from Mexico to try to keep the parasite out. Officials have also set up nearly 8,000 traps across Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. Among 13,000 screening samples, so far, none have turned up NWS.

[–] Jimbabwe@lemmy.world 35 points 14 hours ago

Maybe he meant end of cooperation because in times past, we would have unified against this threat and kept it at bay, but now we’re all fucked and everything is on fire so nobody has time to deal with the situation?

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 9 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

You do realize the “/s” denotes they are being sarcastic.

Also:

[–] FenderStratocaster@lemmy.world -4 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago) (1 children)

It's only sarcasm because he said, "It's so great to". This means OP believes the other portion of the comment, but doesn't actually believe it's great.

It's a doomer karma farming comment with no substance.

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

No more than you putting words in ops mouth to fit your hateful agenda. 🤷‍♂️

[–] FenderStratocaster@lemmy.world -2 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago) (1 children)

What are you talking about? What's my agenda? Why am I hateful?

OP said it was the end of civilization. That's a little glib.

As someone living in what was once the historical range of screwworms, it was nice knowing you all.

[–] Bluefalcon@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 13 hours ago

The US governmemt has this. Jist run RFK jr out there. He will eat them all up.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 8 points 14 hours ago

Look for draining or enlarging wounds, as well as signs of discomfort. Also look for screwworm larvae (maggots) and eggs in or around body openings, such as the nose, ears, and genitalia, or the navel of newborn animals.

While NWS can infect humans—and those cases are grisly—it is relatively rare.

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 7 points 14 hours ago (4 children)

What is this the new African killer bee scare? They're tracing it by the mile?

[–] 418_im_a_teapot@sh.itjust.works 9 points 12 hours ago

I would not underestimate this particular threat. Under a more competent administration I would at least worry slightly less. But the levels of incompetence in positions of power have me genuinely worried. This is a real threat that we have carefully managed since the Nixon administration (IIRC). If it makes its way here it will wreak havoc on livestock.

[–] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 4 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago) (2 children)

In practice it means more expensive meat. Only numbers I can find is 10% to 30% increase in price, depending on how well the government handles this. And other countries doing import bans even more.

[–] kmartburrito@lemmy.world 0 points 3 hours ago

Thanks Obama

[–] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

I suppose I can keep not buying beef because it's too expensive.

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 3 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

I hear Texans are having to cut down to three or four steaks a day.

Truly the end times are upon us.

[–] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 4 points 7 hours ago

You jest, but we might just have us some brisket riots.

[–] SarcasticMan@lemmy.world 7 points 13 hours ago

You probably don't have anything to fear, I think 12 people got it in the '72 outbreak, but it can be brutal for livestock.

[–] Hugin@lemmy.world 3 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Oh yeah I remember that old horror movie about the killer bees. The Swarm. Scared the crap out of me as a kid.

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 4 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Is that the one where the bees cause a nuclear meltdown in Houston or something?

[–] Hugin@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

They cause a nuclear explosion even though the power plant should only be able to go into meltdown.

Edit the scene. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=So8Ut2evqko

[–] Dudewitbow@lemmy.zip 6 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

dont worry, the ivermectin will protect the people

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 11 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

In fact, that's exactly what it is for. That and mites, but the mites adapt quickly.

[–] Dudewitbow@lemmy.zip 5 points 14 hours ago

of course, partially why I brought it up. but a decent amount of people willing to take that ivermectin live at the border.

[–] RaoulDuke@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 14 hours ago

Ship them to the fascist regime.
