No, she didn't.
"We used to compare the strength of our democracy to communist dictators,” she noted. “That’s what we’re dealing with right now in Donald Trump. And these titans of industry are not speaking up.”
She's calling him a "dictator " in a roundabout way and compare his mandate to a communist dictatorship ( you guess wich one).
“We used to compare the strength of our democracy to communist dictators. That’s what we’re dealing with right now in Donald Trump. And these titans of industry are not speaking up,”
If you think Harris is saying Trump is pursuing communism in any way shape or form with this sentence, you're a fucking idiot.
I'm talking to you, TheHill.com
What does the appositive “That” refer to? My understanding of grammar would say it is the most recently preceding noun, which in this case has a specifier.
Harris wrote in her memoir “107 Days,” which was released Tuesday, that she predicted how Trump would act in a second term, but she didn’t expect the level of capitulation from the private sector toward him.
She was pressed on MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show” about why she didn’t anticipate such action and responded that she believed “titans of industry would be guardrails for our democracy.”
“And one by one by one, they have been silent, they have been … feckless,” Harris said. “It’s not like they’re going to lose their yacht or their house in the Hamptons.”
“Democracy sustains capitalism. Capitalism thrives in a democracy. And, right now, we are dealing with, as I called him at my speech on the Ellipse, a tyrant,” she said, referencing her rally last year on the White House Ellipse in Washington. “We used to compare the strength of our democracy to communist dictators. That’s what we’re dealing with right now in Donald Trump. And these titans of industry are not speaking up,”
Harris predicted that corporate leaders haven’t spoken up because they fear Trump’s threats, want a merger approved or want to avoid an investigation.
The former vice president in her Ellipse speech before the 2024 election called Trump a “petty tyrant” and warned that “the United States of America is not a vessel for the schemes of wannabe dictators.”
She believed that the "titans of industry would be guardrails for our democracy?" WTF? The people spending billions of dollars to make sure people believe that unions are evil and that trickle-down economics was created by God?
Yeah. Before the rule of law was so corroded from trump farts it actually was a fairly reliable thing for industry to support the Constitution and society as a whole; to respect it, to not try publicly and zealously to destroy it.
I know it sounds like a different planet.
Well except for fascism in Europe, American companies overthrowing democracies overseas or the Business Plot.
oooh what's the Business Plot?
You should absolutely read the interview transcript.
Misquoted barely scratches how deliberately misleading that headline was.
My barber escaped communism in Albania. He says Trump is acting like the communist dictators used to act. He was unaware of Kamala’s comments, so I told him. He said no no it’s true. He’s behaving like them. The economic shade of meaning is irrelevant here. The dictatorial part is the main message.
I am aware of this.
The phrasing of the headline in question is deliberately meant to portray Kamala as criticizing Trump for being a commie, not an authoritarian.
I was agreeing with you and adding another, more experienced perspective. 🤷♂️
In this political climate, the goal of many outlets is to grab attention and leave impressions, superceding any sense of obligation to inform accurately.
It is well understood that whenever a Republican sees empathy in policy, it's communism. Reductionistic. Idiotic.
Attempting to paint Kamala as someone who is calling Donald Trump a communist, is a specific attempt to lump her (and by extension, democrats) in with the mouth breathers who invoke communism, meant as a slur. As in, she's just as reductionist and stupid as the Republicans.
She isn't.
We can certainly exchange stories about survivors of the Warsaw Pact, but that just doesn't enter into what's going on with this particular story.
And this is why people dislike engaging with our side. Professorial condescension is not a great way to convince people to agree with you. I’m sure you’re the life of every party.
Like your other point, this is tangential.
How much further, and how many more exchanges do you intend to have, discussing anything other than what is most required for this very specific smear/hit?
This is just another campaign to help the GOP
Each side accusing the other of being communism is peak American politics.
Each side accusing the other of being communism is peak American politics.
Misinformation is peak American politics. You can see Kamala Harris's direct quote in the comments on this post, and see with one hundred percent clarity that she said nothing even vaguely related to the smear headline.
And peak Lemmy is people presuming a Howard university grad who has a JD is not aware of what communism is and isn’t comparing him to a “communist dictator” because MAGA folks know communism=bad.
"I thought the Titans of industry would be the guardrails of democracy".
Such bullshit. Industry has always loved fascism, it's the ideal state for corporations. This explains why mainstream politics in the US has been inching towards fascist authoritanism since at least Nixon.
Trump didn't start this... he's just the right guy at the right time, the US would have gotten here sooner or later.
If I go into politics, everyone gets free kitty from government and if you are allergic to cats or similar you get another pet :3
Animals are not objects.
We are all objects on this glorious day.
...she believed “titans of industry would be guardrails for our democracy.”
What fucking planet are you living on, lady?
She lost to Trump. She needs to just leave politics.
I'm not fan of hers, but that's not how politics work.
Why can’t you see she was being hyperbolic?
