The United Nations believes it has solved the mystery of why an escalator abruptly stopped shortly after Donald Trump stepped onto it on Tuesday - his videographer may have accidentally triggered a safety mechanism.

U.N. spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said a readout of the escalator's central processing unit indicated it "had stopped after a built-in safety mechanism on the comb step was triggered at the top of the escalator."

He said Trump's videographer had been traveling backwards up the escalator to capture his arrival with First Lady Melania Trump.

Vladimir Lenin.

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 7 points 19 hours ago

I prefer to believe the escalator simply refused to move for him

[–] Professorozone@lemmy.world 9 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I'm sure it wasn't his 6'3" 240lb frame.

[–] PissingIntoTheWind@lemmy.world 2 points 21 hours ago

If I stand next to Trump and I’m taller than him. He’s shorter than 6’1. Max he’s 5’10.

[–] TemplaerDude@sh.itjust.works 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I would have spent exactly zero seconds investigating this. Who gives a fuck.

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 11 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Because they immediately blamed conspirators from "the left" and the UN (that huge group of our enemies).

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 12 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

I hear they found a screwdriver near the elevator with radical far left writing on it.

[–] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 6 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

I heard the screw driver said "Mastercraft". Is this some kind of slang used by the Radical Left?

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 7 points 19 hours ago

I heard they found a left-handed screwdriver! You can't deny that hard evidence!

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the U.N. findings.

However, a U.N. official said the White House had operated its own teleprompter.

The old tactic. Make up shit to start a fight and then pretend you never did it.

Was the elevator antifa?

[–] GuyFawkes@midwest.social 68 points 1 day ago (1 children)

At least we all know Trump will acknowledge the truth of what happened and move on.

[–] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

As is tradition

[–] SupraMario@lemmy.world 57 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Wrong Mitch died

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I mean, first of all you have to remember he's afraid of stairs. Probably less so on an escalator because it has big sides but still.

Melania deserves a lot of shit but she just said fuck it I'm walking and kept moving which was the right thing as it happened. Demented Donny Rapist would have just stood there for another half hour.

[–] Mog_fanatic@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Trump's description of this is so hilarious

"All I got from the United nations was an escalator that stopped right in the middle. If the first lady wasn't in great shape, she would've fallen. But she's in great shape. We're both in good shape."

Like I get it I guess but it just became stairs. Are we seriously acting like conquering a flight of stairs is some heroic feat that requires Herculean strength and athleticism?

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

He looked dumb, so of course its the evil Democrats out to get him. United Nations, whatever. They didn’t hire him to remodel their building.

[–] Mossheart@lemmy.ca 3 points 22 hours ago

It is in a gerontocracy.

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 2 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Technically, you shouldn't walk on stopped escalators. There's the obvious (though less bothersome) issue of the uneven and higher-than-normal rise...but also that escalators aren't designed for a static load, and other components can suddenly fail, leading to a partial collapse.

There's also the issue that the escalator could suddenly start moving again, which, if you're using them as stairs, could really throw you off (in more ways than one).

Not trying to side with Trump here...not at all...just pointing out the lesser-known safety concerns of stopped escalators. They aren't "temporarily stairs", like Mitch said...especially in high traffic areas, where people of mixed physical capabilities may be using them.

[–] hexappeal16@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago

I think the whole world knows by now we couldn't get that lucky 🤣

[–] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

As Mitch once said, they can never break!

[–] jaschen306@sh.itjust.works 3 points 18 hours ago

It was the Epstein Files that did it

Thanks, Obama

[–] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

And the Jews, but not the Israel Jews, the other ones. Dear God, where was George Soros yesterday?!

[–] dmention7@midwest.social 30 points 1 day ago

Maybe next we can get to the bottom of other radical left conspiracies, such as:

"Why did the UN's wifi drop Trump's phone connection right as he was placing his McDonalds order??"

and

"What caused the UN bathroom lights to turn off after 26 minutes of Trump sitting on the can, when the motion sensor was clearly set to 30 minutes??"

One of the running gags in the show Frasier was the dimwitted presenter, Bulldog, animatedly accusing everyone under the sun of stealing his stuff, only to then find it in the most obvious possible place.

I am not saying this Administration is dimwitted, but the story is uncannily similar.

[–] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Bulldog: Hey, where the hell's my Cosell tape? Somebody stole my Cosell tape! This stinks. This is total BS! This- Oh, here it is.

[–] manxu@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

Made me grin ear to ear to read that! Thank you!

[–] grue@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I was gonna say "Bulldog would 100% be a manosphere talking head if that show had been made today," but then I remembered that it was made today because they rebooted it. So I looked it up and apparently he came out as gay, which I guess, yeah, being formerly super-repressed tracks as the other option.

Too bad Kelsey Grammar himself is a MAGA POS, so I won't watch the show.

[–] manxu@piefed.social 6 points 1 day ago

Fear not! I did so you don't have to. Even by reboot standards, it's not good. The characters are okay, the setup is okay, the writing has none of the wit of the original. It's one of those shows where the laugh track comes on and you wonder if there is a different show running on a different TV, because there was nothing to laugh at in this one.

[–] CubitOom 25 points 1 day ago

Man, that scared shitless look on his face was great. You could just tell he was thinking "this is it".

[–] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago

Did he fall? Or did he just stand there a few minutes?

Jimmy kimmel did this

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

It was the INSURRECTION, I tell you!!111

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Anyone put this to Curb theme song yet? :)
