The fascists want and need a 'Reichstag' event, and they're trying as hard as they can to attach that level of significance to this. They need something scary enough to get people to happily hand over their freedom.
Problem is, gun deaths are normal in America and not enough people know who this asshole Charlie Kirk was, so it just isn't going to work.

Because it was a useful thing that happened at a prime time for being manipulated in their favour.
republicans want to use this as an excuse to violently oppress trans people and the left more broadly.
centrist democrats want republicans to violently oppress the left, even if it means the violent oppression of trans people. They're banking on "the left" being the next "then they came for."
Because the people doing it have lost their fucking minds.
They are trying to make him magas version of the reichstag fire.
