Would you rather a Chinese-owned TikTok or one run by a consortium of Trump-supporting billionaires?

That’s the choice Australia is being asked to consider.

The Trump administration has outlined that a proposed deal for TikTok to remain in operation in the United States would transfer the control of TikTok’s US operations to a US company that will have seven seats on the board, with six filled by Americans. Donald Trump has suggested a consortium of US businesses, including Larry Ellison’s Oracle and Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch’s Fox Corporation, are involved in the deal.

Neither! Kill social media!

[–] SereneSadie@lemmy.myserv.one 2 points 17 hours ago

That's already in the works.

"May have to choose?" How about they get to choose? Us in America have no choice.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Have they tried no TikTok for a change?

They don't have to think about it at all. The answer is don't use fascist propaganda machine. So fucking simple.

The children yearn for the fascist propaganda machine!

Rupert and friends have done far more harm to Australia than China

I think it's really interesting that TikTok is very different for Chinese people. It's not the same app there as it is here.

[–] DrFistington@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

You could choose your own interests, and block both. Just saying

[–] socsa@piefed.social 8 points 1 day ago

Or just don't use tiktok

If I liked short-form video, which I have not been very impressed with, I'd probably watch YouTube Shorts rather than either.

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 day ago

Dan Supernault has been hard at work making an open source, AGPLv3, soon to be ActivityPub Fediverse-linked shortform video service called Loops.

[–] NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 day ago

Youtube shorts are generally considered the worst of both worlds.

Most creators don't actually understand the medium and Youtube screws up their own algorithm between forcing shorts on people but also basing them off of long form video watching.

China! The GOP are the worst evil.

[–] Echinoderm@aussie.zone 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The US government or the Chinese government... I'm actually not sure which I trust more at the moment.

[–] Someone@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

I'd say China. Not because they're inherently better, but because they at least seem to be relatively stable and run by people who appear to be sane.

But really I'd just rather not put myself in any situation where I'd have to trust either of them.
