Students at a high school in Wisconsin are upset about their district's new electronic pass system that limits the number of times a student can use the bathroom during the school day and week.

The new ePass system at Arrowhead Union High School, located in a suburb of Milwaukee, functions as an electronic hall pass that students must use to take bathroom breaks during school hours.

Are the teachers and admin limited in their bathroom breaks? They should be, after all it "ensures safety, maximizes student learning, encourages responsibility and minimizes inappropriate behavior."

When I was young, limiting bathroom access for students was common. I always thought it was bonkers. Somewhere along the line people realized it was barbaric, and unhealthy. Under current laws, while not explicitly written, it likely violates the schools legal obligations to the health and safety of a child. This district is fixing to get sued.

In Canada, bathroom access by students is a right that cannot be taken away by fascist school administrators.

Seriously what if someone eats something bad. Has to go to the bathroom 3 times on Monday. Come Friday they just shit/piss themselves, or bleed through their clothes?

That's a great way to scar kids for life. Life happens, we shouldn't make it harder on people

Just gotta remind the teacher that the 5 o'clock news will use their full name when they report they punished a kid for going to the bathroom, which will look really fucking bad in a google search, and any teacher with a lick of common sense will shut right the fuck up and wave the kid out.

The teachers have nothing to do with it. It's an actual electronic monitoring pass.

[–] Stern@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

They might not directly but the person punishing kiddo will either be them or a school admin, and the argument doesn't change in either case.

Somebody has to actually enforce it at the end of the day. That person has a name and the W-2 listing the school as their employer. Without that you can do whatever electronic nonsense you want. Rules are a social system not a technical system

At this point I think the abuse and Trauma is the point. This country hates children teenagers, there's no other way to look at the sum total of how they're mistreated

I've always told mine that if they have to go to the bathroom but the teacher says no that they should just go anyway and let me deal with it.

What is wrong with Wisconsin?

Good thing US classrooms are already equipped with litter boxes, then. /s

This might be a new record for how stupid and short-sighted can a school board be.

Literally 1/4 of these kids will likely be voting in the next election & they will not forget the time their girlfriend pissed herself because she had a UTI & wasn't allowed to go to the restroom.

Their corridors are gonna smell.

Pee in the principals office instead. Make the ones making the rules suffer.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 13 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Now most schools not only look like prisons, they are treating the kids like prisoners.

[–] riyehn@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

No, because most prisoners can still use the toilet whenever they need to.

[–] fluffykittycat@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 day ago

They shouldn't be forced to attend such facilities. This is wrong and we all know it.

[–] fluffykittycat@slrpnk.net 6 points 1 day ago

That's so evil. Teens don't deserve this kind of abuse

It’s weird to see my old high school in the news and it’s not about a football scandal.
