Overview:

The community dedicated to boycotting the US until they stop fascism, restore full democracy and start following international law.

Americans have a moral obligation to resist Donald Trump and project 2025 at every turn.

America is a flawed democracy currently being ruled by oligarchs. Stop the backslide! Dont let America become the next Hungary.

America needs to challenge the court rulings of citizens united v. fec and shelby county v. holder, protect the media, implement independent district drawing, and the single transferable vote so they don't end up having people stay home in life-changing elections because they cannot vote for their favourite candidate.

In February, Daily Hive spoke with several Canadians who decided to call off their U.S. vacations in protest. Now back from their vacations, we followed up with them to discuss how it felt to change their plans and what it would take for them to visit the U.S. again.

From Canadians I’ve spoken to, it’s not even just protest there’s also a lot of fear and uncertainty in dealing with border crossing.

I don't want to visit the US because too many unhinged people own lots of guns.

But outside of that, I can't risk taking a vacation there, getting scooped up by ICE, and being detained for 3-4 weeks - or worse landing in a death camp in fucking Africa or South America.

It's crazy to think North Korea is safer to visit than the US right now. North Korea doesn't have a history of just nabbing visitors out of the blue for no reason. The USA can't say that.

The gun violence thing is not what it's made out to be, not even close. As with any news, you only hear the crazy shit, because it's crazy shit. Not saying we don't have a problem, we certainly do, but it's not what you think.

Little less than half of gun deaths are suicide. That's a serious problem, not downplaying it, but no risk to you. Most of the rest is gang violence (code for, "let the darkies kill each other", but deserves separation this conversation), not your problem. The rest, as with any violence, is mostly personal, and again, not your problem. Point being, 99.99% of violence is non-random.

Worried about random violence? The CDC reports, year after year, that gun deaths and vehicular deaths are on par, about 50,000 a year, give or take a couple of thousand. THAT is what you should be worried about. No one is going to cap you walking down the street, but they might turn you into paste, in or out of a vehicle.

And yeah, the kidnapping thing scares the shit out of me. My wife has had plenty of friends go back and forth to the Philippines this year, she's dying to go home, we got the money, for now. We're not grabbing too many Asians yet, but they're likely next on the list. Fuck me, people around here think she's Mexican as is!

tl:dr; Vehicles are far more likely to kill you, not safe to travel here, either coming, going or staying. But c'mon! You better mind your shit if you go to North Korea. :)

Both are valid reasons to avoid the disunited states.

We are officially 100% fly over country now. Keep it up everyone. You don't need us, but we sure need you.

Trump will impose a flyover tax

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

I'd rather not fly over US controlled airspace, especially given the cuts at the FAA.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago

I would not fly over the US with their underfunded air traffic control. It's only a matter of when.

You guys can afford vacations?

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

The main reason I can afford vacations is because I have a full time salary, but no car taking 10% of it back.

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 5 points 1 day ago

Tourism is 100% discretionary and can easily be substituted

It is also bad for environment if people are flying for it.
