Exactly. The whole point of memes is remixing a shared cultural context to create new meanings. If you're just whistling up a bland piece of shit image to convey a thought, that's just political cartooning with, if it can be believed, even less effort than usual.

We used to value creativity on the internet. Images we had never seen before, words we've never read, jokes we've never heard.

But then memes templates took off like a cancer. The same handful of jokes over and over and over, words overwritten to be about a different topic. Why make something new when you can just copy like a middle schooler substituting their own wit for South Park quotes?

And we ate it up. Now it's not just people trying to be funny, it's people trying to get followers. It's people hoarding folders of every edit of the same movie screenshot to pick from when they want to seem funny but have nothing to say.

AI memes are only a small step down from the usual slop that floods the Internet. Do we still find the joke we've heard a thousand times funny or are we dogs hearing the dinner bell?

Copying has been part of art since the first people put their hand prints on cave walls.

Ai is worse than copying. It’s like tracing.

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 14 points 1 month ago

AI is like asking someone else to trace for you.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The copying you describe is recreating the original, it's not at all the same with memes.

That analogy doesn't make any sense. Memes are exactly like tracing (literally copying 99% of the original pixel-for-pixel), I have no idea what that makes AI

[–] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

It's worse than cheap, it's tacky

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Meh, I fail to see how taking a copy of a screen cap that someone already copied and changing the text is somehow better than coming up with a completely original idea but not having the artistic ability to pull it off.

The few posts I've done in Gimp are trash. They would have been improved had I used AI. It's not like I drew Musk. Instead I took a screen cap and cut and paste his face over a screen cap of Scarlett O'Hara. AI would have done the screen capture instead of me. There would be no art either way.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm pretty on the fence about it but I'm inclined to agree overall. It's not like you were gonna pay an artist to make the meme, would it really that bad if you used AI?

The questionable legality of its training data is mainly what makes me dislike AI images but it's not like people are getting permission to copy non-AI memes

What am I gonna do with all this gate oil without a gate to keep?

[–] kibiz0r@midwest.social 32 points 1 month ago

AI art is the aesthetic of fascism. It pushes the viewer’s thoughts in a particular direction, with the illusion of substance and serious thought underpinning it, but ultimately thin and without any consistent cohesive beliefs or connection to any objective shared reality.

It worked!
The trigger was deleted by OP!
Congrats!

[–] henfredemars 17 points 1 month ago

I don’t want connect over some dime-a-dozen clanker “art.”

Batman being anti-gun is so silly to me.

"Oh yeah Bruce sure thing, if I need to protect myself I should just fly my private jet to get trained by the master of an ancient secret order of ninjas while my SAS trained butler takes care of affairs in the mansion (and presumably a team of people taking care of business shit for my billion dollar corporation like it has been since Daddy left it to me when I was 9.)"

Like my guy I get it, you saw your parents get shot and that has to be pretty damn traumatic, but dude not all of us have the resources to get trained by a guy who will become a supervillain and our enemy, some of us find it easier to save up $600 and buy a damn Glicky. Get therapy.

Also AI sucks.

It's a tale about a billionaire fascist who "fights crime". I wouldn't expect anything remotely realistic.

[–] SalamenceFury@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Motherfucker almost all of Batman's rogue gallery are rich mob bosses that he literally cannot fight with money or the law because the entire law is bought by said rich mob bosses. Also tell me how Bruce Wayne giving the Joker billions is gonna stop him from bombing orphanages and gassing entire hospitals.

Oh, and the city is literally fucking cursed, and there's a secret society that does its best to keep it as corrupt and as crime ridden as possible to keep their power and status.

Maybe you should read comics instead of taking your entire knowledge of Batman from "now talk" Arkham Batman memes.

[–] ArcaneSlime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Hell, a billionaire vigilante so disconnected from the lives of normal people with his secret lair, custom supercar, SAS butler, and fancy unattainable gadgets that looks down on the people who just want to protect themselves with guns seems realistic enough to me.

"No killing, now watch me throw some nameless henchman off this fucking roof."

[–] SalamenceFury@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Y'all need to stop using Arkham Batman as your point of reference.

[–] ArcaneSlime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 1 month ago

Tbf there's so many over time, would you prefer I use Grey Pajamas Batman or Nipple Suit Batman instead?

But in the current comics that are being released today he still very much embodies all the things I mentioned, as far as I've seen, so I don't think he's changed his position on that just yet.

[–] SpiceDealer@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 1 month ago

More Dark Knight Returns-based memes, please.

[–] Sunshine@piefed.social 5 points 1 month ago

I can salute to this meme!

Let's not use guns, let's just beat the criminals into a vegetative state

[–] LesserAbe@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Batman should use a gun. Criminals are constantly escaping from Arkham, but that's how he likes it otherwise he would get bored. If police encountered Mr Freeze or the Joker killing civilians you know they're shooting to kill.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 6 points 1 month ago

He did use a gun at some point in the early days.

[–] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com -3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

"Fash should fash harder."

[–] LesserAbe@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Well if we're talking about should Batman exist at all, no. Either as a ultra wealthy individual or freelance crime fighter. I'm just saying in the universe of Batman (setting aside DC overall which raises more issues) it doesn't make sense that Batman is like "I'm a vigilante, but I'll let these known repeat murderers off easy." He's already taken the judgement of good/bad on himself rather than let democratically appointed actors handle things. So if you've already taken that step what's the fetish for not using a gun?

[–] SalamenceFury@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Batman doesn't use guns or kill because he thinks if he does it he'll turn into Michael Myers.

[–] LordKitsuna@lemmy.world -2 points 1 month ago

I can't help but feel like there is a slight tinge of irony because the main complaint I see against AI art is that it's all based on Stolen work but this meme is also stolen work it is very unlikely that OP is the original artist that drew that.

Now i say slight because it's obviously different just slapping some text over a screenshot vs ai training but it's enough to make me smirk a little
