There were two “Reigns of Terror,” if we would but remember it and consider it; the one wrought murder in hot passion, the other in heartless cold blood; the one lasted mere months, the other had lasted a thousand years; the one inflicted death upon ten thousand persons, the other upon a hundred millions; but our shudders are all for the “horrors” of the minor Terror, the momentary Terror, so to speak; whereas, what is the horror of swift death by the axe, compared with lifelong death from hunger, cold, insult, cruelty, and heart-break? What is swift death by lightning compared with death by slow fire at the stake? A city cemetery could contain the coffins filled by that brief Terror which we have all been so diligently taught to shiver at and mourn over; but all France could hardly contain the coffins filled by that older and real Terror—that unspeakably bitter and awful Terror which none of us has been taught to see in its vastness or pity as it deserves.

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Sources on the fighting in Palestine against Israel. In general, CW for footage of battles, explosions, dead people, and so on:

English-language Palestinian Marxist-Leninist twitter account.
English-language twitter account that collates news (and has automated posting when the person running it goes to sleep).
Arab-language twitter account with videos and images of fighting.
English-language (with some Arab retweets) Twitter account based in Lebanon.
English-language Palestinian Twitter account which reports on news from the Resistance Axis.

English-language PalestineResist telegram channel.

Various sources that are covering the Ukraine conflict are also covering the one in Palestine, like Rybar.

The Country of the Week is Palestine! Feel free to chime in with books, essays, longform articles, even stories and anecdotes or rants. More detail here.

Here is the map of the Ukraine conflict, courtesy of Wikipedia.

The weekly update is here.

The bulletins site is down.

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists

Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Add to the above list if you can.

Resources For Understanding The War

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Telegram Channels

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

Pro-Russian

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.

https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.

https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.

https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine

Almost every Western media outlet.

https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.

https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

I really wish a F-35 get shot down or blown up before it takes off for kicks and laughs, really miss that feeling when that Global Hawk got shot down over Hormuz in 2019.

Haven’t seen anything definitive but feeling seems to be that ground invasion is indeed going to happen now. Otherwise what are the evacuation order and huge troop movements for?And with the deadlines given, it does seem like today is probably the day. Only thing I could see delaying it would be logistics. Seems like troops and armor still mustering at the border. Maybe they’ll push it off another day or two, but sure seems like it could start at any time.

Lebanon PM hints that Hezbollah has not ruled out entering Gaza-Israel war

🔶️ Lebanon’s caretaker prime minister said Friday that he had not been given any assurances from Hezbollah about the Iran-backed group not getting dragged into the Gaza-Israel war.

🔶️ “It’s on Israel to stop provoking Hezbollah,” Najib Mikati was quoted as saying in an interview with a local channel

The Country of the Week is Palestine!

As mentioned in the preamble, feel free to post or recommend any material related to Palestine, whether from a thousand years ago or yesterday. You can post it anywhere in the thread, but you can also reply to this comment if you wish.

If you're feeling particularly ambitious and want homework, you could take on any or all of these questions (no reward, but I'll be very proud of you):

  • Who are the main political actors? Are they compradors, nationalists, international socialists, something else?
  • What are the most salient domestic political issues; those issues that repeatedly shape elections over the last 10, 20 years. Every country has its quirks that complicate analysis - for example, Brexit in the UK.
  • What is the country's history? You don't have to go back a thousand years if that's not relevant, and I'm counting "history" as basically anything that has happened over a year ago.
  • What factions exist, historically and currently? If there is an electoral system, what are the major parties and their demographic bases? Are there any minor parties with large amounts of influence? Independence movements? Religious groups?
  • How socially progressive or conservative are they? Is there equality for different ethnic groups, or are some persecuted? Do they have LGBTQIA+ rights? Have they improved over time, or gotten worse?
  • What role do foreign powers play in the country’s politics and economy? Is there a particular country nearby or far away that is nearly inseparable from them, for good or bad reasons? Is their trade dominated by exports/imports to one place? Are they exploited, exploiters, or something in between?
  • If applicable, what is the influence of former colonial relationships on the modern economy and politics?
  • Is the country generally stable? Do you think there will be a coup at some point in the future, and if so, what faction might replace them?

Last week's country was Syria.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Israeli airstrikes on Syrian territory could trigger an armed escalation across the entire region.

The ministry described the strikes as a blatant violation of Syria's sovereignty and fundamental norms of international law.

Notes from Rybar on Putin's commentary about Israel earlier today:

spoilerSpeech by Russian President Vladimir Putin on the escalation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict zone

🔻Main points:

▪️The Palestinian problem is in the heart of every Muslim, and is perceived by them as a manifestation of injustice raised to an incredible degree.

▪️ The United States neglected the mechanisms in the Arab-Israeli conflict zone and relied on the material needs of the people in the Palestinian territory.

▪️ During the creation of Israel there was talk of creating a sovereign Palestine at once, but this was never done.

▪️ What is happening is terrible. The bitterness in Israel and Palestine is very great, but we must strive to minimize civilian casualties, children and women must be left alone.

▪️ If men have decided to fight among themselves, then let them fight among themselves.

▪️ It is unknown whether the situation between Israel and Palestine will be calmed in the near future, but this could lead to big problems.

▪️ Russia's position on Palestine and Israel is well known to the parties; we are for the implementation of UN decisions and the creation of a Palestinian state.

▪️ In both the USA and Israel there are many supporters of the creation of a Palestinian state, but the forces advocating a military solution are gaining the upper hand.

▪️ Accusations against Iran of involvement in the aggravation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict are unsubstantiated.

▪️ I don’t understand why the United States is pulling aircraft carrier groups towards Israel, this is aggravating the situation. Decided to scare someone? There are people there who are no longer afraid of anything

▪️ The escalation in Israel will not affect oil production, but may affect logistics, insurance, and freight.

▪️ “I hope common sense will prevail.”

13 Oct. 2023

Press release

We adamantly reject to be expelled from our homes once again. We will resist Israel’s attempt to ethnically cleanse Gaza. Our unwavering determination is to resist Israel’s pursuit of ethnic cleansing in Gaza, firmly resolved to prevent a second Nakba from unfolding. The current developments in Gaza represent an extraordinarily audacious and brutal endeavor to forcibly remove the Palestinian indigenous people from their land.

Israel has publicly declared its plan to commit genocide against Palestinians.

The Zionist entity, supported by Western governments, has conducted a war of intense bombardment, releasing more than 6,000 bombs upon Gaza within the past week. Nearly 500 children have been tragically killed as a result of the intense bombardment, carried out by the Zionist entity. They have targeted mosques, a church, educational institutions, residences, and medical facilities with bombings, yet it is our people who are erroneously branded as terrorists.

Today, we have seen the mobilization of millions in the Arab and Muslim world, extending their support to the courageous Palestinians in Gaza. We express our heartfelt gratitude for their solidarity and implore them to continue, urging them to march to the borders and play their part in this historic juncture that promises the restoration of our freedom and the dignity of all Arabs and Muslims.

To our allies living in western countries, the free noble people of those societies. You too have a role to play, to pressure your governments to abandon their support to Netanyahu and his fascist government. To correct the lies of the media, lift this barbaric siege on our people.

Yes what the Zionists are doing is inhumane, it is unprecedented, it is barbaric and contravenes all the laws and treaties that the so-called free and democratic countries claim they believe in. But our resolve is unbreakable. We will not surrender our legitimate fight for freedom and self-determination. We will either live standing tall or we will die fighting.

💬 Statement by 🟢 #Hamas regarding the allegations of targetting children:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

The Palestinian resistance does not target children, and Western media outlets must ensure accuracy and not blindly side with the zionist narrative filled with lies and slanders.

We, in the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas, firmly deny the fabricated allegations promoted by some Western media outlets, which unprofessionally adopt the zionist narrative full of lies and slanders against our Palestinian people and their resistance. The latest of these was the claim of killing children, beheading them, and targeting civilians. We consider this adoption and bias towards the zionist narrative without verification as nothing but a media downfall in an attempt to cover up the crimes of the occupation and its massacres committed day and night in Gaza.

These actions amount to war crimes and genocide by targeting civilians, cutting off electricity, water, food, and medical supplies.

The Palestinian resistance and Al-Qassam Brigades targeted the zionist military and security system in the Al-Aqsa Storm battle, which are legitimate targets. At the same time, they aimed to avoid civilians. Many field video clips witnessed this, and many settlers spoke about it with documented testimoniesthrough the media.

The biased Western media outlets, which favor the zionist narrative, failed to mention the extent of zionist criminality against our people in the Gaza Strip, which completely wiped out entire neighborhoods, bombed residential buildings over the heads of their residents, leading to the killing of 950 Palestinian civilians so far, including 260 children and 230 women, all killed without prior warning.

This zionist crime can only be described as genocide and war crimes. We, therefore, call on these Western media outlets to be objective and professional in reporting and covering the events of the zionist aggression and not to blatantly and blindly adopt the zionist narrative.

Using the most up-to-date casualty count I could find, the attack on Israel is like 15 9/11s. And given the 1000 casualties suffered by Palestinians since last week (gross underestimate), the Gaza Strip has suffered 53.9 9/11s.

If any group has a chance to capitalize on the conflict and profit from the violence, it will probably be the US military-industrial complex. One cannot ignore the rise in the share price of US arms manufacturers Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman: these securities have risen significantly in value since the escalation in the Middle East. Not only in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but in any other conflict, the U.S. response is always to escalate violence rather than promote peace. The U.S. is one of the few that can use conflict for disgusting profits.
