Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley issued a heartfelt plea to Canadian visitors this week, acknowledging the city’s tourism-dependent economy is suffering from a dramatic decline in international visitors, particularly from Canada, which represents the city’s largest international market.

“As the mayor of Las Vegas, I’m telling everybody in Canada, please come. We love you, we need you, and we miss you,” Berkley said during a press conference this week, where she addressed the multiple challenges facing the entertainment capital’s tourism industry.

The mayor’s latest comments echo concerns she first raised in an August press conference, where she painted a stark picture of the tourism decline.

“International travel is way down. People are not coming to the United States,” Berkley said last month. “’

lol even Americans don’t want to go back. Turns out that tourists don’t like being nickel and dimed just for breathing. Who knew?

[–] bagsy@lemmy.world 12 points 6 days ago

I can't believe that threatening Canadians didn't make them want to come to the US and spend all their money.

[–] etherphon@midwest.social 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Las Vegas is a city built for a different era, and we're not in that era any more. I really don't see it re-surging, at least until Trump allows fights to the death at MGM Grand. Kinda /s.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 6 points 6 days ago

It could come back, but it won't be the same Vegas. They're trying hard to pivot.

Gambling needs to take a back seat to entertainment. It's chock full of stuff to do, the Sphere, the Dam, the canyons, the desert, family-friendly shows, Area-15, and they're cleaning up the strip.

They just need the US to be on the menu for tourism again and that's not going to happen with all this motions to everything going on.

[–] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

Vegas doesn't care about anything but their money

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 260 points 1 week ago (16 children)

Lol get fucked. Sent with love from Canada.

[–] spinne@sh.itjust.works 107 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Ohhh, oh no! We need your tourism toonies in Las Vegas! We had no idea just how much Canadians spent on American stuff like bourbon and vacations! Ohh no, we're so sorry for those silly things we said, like threatening your sovereignty and being all condescending and dismissive.

Echoing your sentiment from the middle of America. Get fucked! Begging for visitors like that before doing anything to make amends, ugh.

[–] Taldan@lemmy.world 58 points 1 week ago (2 children)

And you just know Trump didn't learn any lesson. He 100% would do it again. I don't blame Canadians in the slightest bit. Honestly I'm happy they're voting with their wallets

Imagine treating your friends like garbage and then being surprised when they don't wanna hang out anymore. My country literally threatened to invade both of our closest neighbors and friends and are now shocked that they hate us. Americans are the neighbor that constantly blasts music with their windows open and steals everyone's shit and then bitches when they don't get invited to neighborhood parties. The man-child of the Americas.

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 61 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Shut up and fuck off, TommySoda!

I was right to yell at TommySoda; they don't visit me anymore ever since I told them to fuck off. The dirty non-visiting bastard...

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 49 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Please come back TommySoda and teach me how to do manufacturing so that my threats and tariffs can hurt both of us instead of just me. I probably won't arrest you a second time.

Trump and his supporters are so delusional, they thought threatening to annex other countries was a compliment

Sorry, but your federal government snatches people off the streets and sends them to concentration camps. We know of at least one Canadian citizen that was kidnapped by ICE, who then died in their custody.

This is in addition to your president threatening to annex us, and starting a trade war for no discernible reason.

No, I will not be visiting. A regime change won't help either.

It will never go back to the way things were, and that's on you collectively.

[–] Jesusaurus@lemmy.world 52 points 1 week ago (2 children)

But wait! There's more! You can also receive a free deportation to a partner country of our choosing regardless of your country of origin!

That's going to be generational trauma. Trust will have to be built with the youth, as adults have already said no.

[–] MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world 29 points 1 week ago

That's going to be generational trauma. Trust will have to be built with the youth, as adults have already said no.

Ending this regime is meaningless if the machinery that enabled it remains intact. The ICE agents that are lustily performing their duties will still live there, and will absolutely vote for more of the same.

There's a segment of the population that still won't get off their asses to vote as though their way of life depended on it.

Passage of time alone, is woefully inadequate to repair what was vandalized.

Gee...

Wonder why people wouldn't think Vegas is safe...

Mayor Shelley Berkley reiterated Thursday that Las Vegas is not a sanctuary city, one day after House Republicans grilled four Democratic mayors and accused them of impeding federal immigration enforcement.

"The city of Las Vegas is not a sanctuary city,” Berkley said in response to a question during a bimonthly press conference.“We follow federal law, and we will do everything that we are supposed to under the law in order to comply with it.”

https://www.reviewjournal.com/news/politics-and-government/las-vegas/mayor-says-las-vegas-is-not-a-sanctuary-city-3316441/

Like, she acts like people can't just look up what she was saying six months ago...

“We have a responsibility, if someone comes into the municipal jail, to notify ICE, and then it’s their responsibility to take it from there,” Berkley said. “As long as the sheriff is comfortable with that and is using the resources he has to do the job that the city of Las Vegas and the county has tasked him with, then I’m very comfortable with that.”

Why risk going to Vegas when a drunk and disordly could cause you to be held by ICE for months? Even if you legally crossed the border, ICE is detaining actual US citizens too.

Anyone with shitty enough risk management for that to seem like a safe bet, either isn't a gambler or already lost all their money on other stupid bets.

So much of Nevada is a handful of mobbed up white nationalists and ultra-conservative Zionists profiteering off the sweet and tears of a migrant Latino working class. The city is a hive of scum and villainy kept afloat by the hard work of the large, active, and occasionally quite radical labor left.

If it wasn't fully immersed in US military bases and California Techie Fascists, it could be ground zero for a full blown socialist movement. Instead, it's just a pit where natural resources go to burn, so that a few dozen oligarchs can be billionaires and a few million service sector workers can enjoy above average wages.

Maybe we just push the whole thing off the Hoover Dam already.

[–] robocall@lemmy.world 65 points 1 week ago (7 children)

Most of the comments are talking about ICE and Canadians disliking the current American regime, which is true. But also Vegas isn't fun anymore. It's so overpriced for what it is. The ruthless corporate nickel and diming exploitation has ruined Vegas as a destination.

If the mayor of Las Vegas wants people to visit, instead of begging Canadians to come back, try telling MGM and Caesars to entice visitors with some deals and value for their money.

[–] Bebopalouie@lemmy.ca 39 points 1 week ago

It’s ridiculously overpriced there now.

A high chance of being shipped to an Alligator Auschwitz Concentration (soon to be death) Camp and treated like what happened to the South Koreans. No thanks.

Also you americans seem to have forgotten that your fascist child rapist president threatened to annex Canada and continues to do so.

Get bent.

I’ll stay in my genetically diverse country of Canada and if I feel like it, I’ll visit any one of the many casinos we have here and keep my money in the greatest nation on earth.

I like people of colour, ethnic origins and choice of religion or lack there of, and honestly, I enjoy feeling safe amongst my brethren and not worrying if myself or my neighbour will be pulled out of their bed because they were born the wrong skin tone or race and sent off to a desolate jail in another country not of their own.

America the fascist can rot and I’m enjoying watching it start to implode.

I feel sorry for the good Americans caught up in this, but you have a line item in your constitution to fight this sort of thing. It’s up to you all to choose what you do with that.

Hey, try this instead:

"We have an armed response force ready to protect you against ICE if they come to try to snatch you. We have lawyers at the ready, and we're fine mobilizing the state's National Guard if it comes to that. If you're in another part of the country and worried about your safety, come to Vegas! You can do some gambling and see the sights without worrying if you're going to make it home to your family or not."

Guaranteed spike in tourism. Don't just ask for what you want. Earn it.

I'm American, have never been to Vegas and was planning a trip. Then all my bills went up. My insurance alone tripled. I now fear traveling state to state as I don't trust the police in red states so no driving through them. I no longer trust the TSA to not arrest me for what I post online so no more flying. I think I will stay right here for the foreseeable future as travel just isn't important to me right now. Would I love to travel? Yes. I need to feel safe and secure in it and to not be financially ruined by it. Right now I just need to focus on making sure my housing and food is secured. I don't have time or security to focus on anything else.
