nobody remembers that trans men exist :( (apart from terfs, sometimes)

“Trans men are just men, but all women are property of men, therefore trans women are sneaky, deceitful predators trying to trick both innocent men and women.”

This is all just an extension of our fucked up patriarchal culture. It’s not that trans men are forgotten, it’s that their outward masculinity makes them irrelevant. They are no longer potential mates for the cishet males and therefore not “dangerous.”

Trans women, however, are a “problem” for those same reasons. Their femininity means they could be targeted as a potential mate for a cishet male, so to the patriarchal privileged they are by nature of existing “deceptive, duplicitous queers.” At the same time, any remaining masculinity in appearance or even the idea that a person could have a penis makes them a threat to other women, because other women are the property of other men. Hence the “trans women are just rapist men using drag to trap women in bathrooms” fallacy that the right loves so much.

I apologize for the window into that psychology. A shower may be warranted.

I can't even comprehend the thought process. It looks to stupid

When you grow up in a rigid world you come to rely on the rules as the foundation you build your beliefs on.

When that foundation starts to crack because it was built on unstable ground you either fight it and attempt to patch it, praying the ground will eventually settle for the last time or you accept the fault and rebuild on solid ground.

Then if your neighbors are doing the same thing you have a community running around patching each others foundations. Many hands make light work of hate.

It's a question of how emotionally invested in that foundation you are. At what point does the ever increasing maintenance cost more than building new? Does the community make it cheap and easy enough that starting over seems pointless? Or does the community make starting over prohibitively expensive?

No empathy for them here. Its just to say there is a twisted logic in it, at least for those who hold the least power in that structure. I'll never understand the behaviors of the powerful.

... at their home 2847 Dudley Ave, Bronx.

It's wild how they used to casually print people's addresses in the newspaper. What a different time.

Also, such a positive article! The newspaper celebrates Christine's transformation, even though it was published in 1952.

Kind of similar to the whole 'racism is learned behavior' thing, like small children are generally not racist unless the parents are really proactive about making them be racist.

[–] tmyakal 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

At least in America, racism is so prevalent and core to our society that I'd never attribute racism in small children solely to bad parenting. Racism and misogyny are driven in part by exposure to... well, just about every part of American culture. Parents can try to course-correct, but (especially white) parents may not have the tools or language to adequately educate their children in the face of cultural indoctrination.

Yeah it's a learned behavior, but there are sources to learn from outside of parental figures

I really think decades of transphobic propaganda in media sullied people to the idea of transition. Like, I think people found it weird or even gross in the past, but it took the social efforts of bigots actually thinking through the consequences to the conservative gender ideology for it to become as hated as it is now. I think a lot of modern gender relations are more constructed for our current time than we know.

I like the bit about how her family and family friends agreed this was a good move when they heard about it. The article makes it sound like everyone was shocked but overall accepting. It's such an optimistic tone, like it's saying "look what science can do now! Isn't it wonderful?" And it is.

The problem is exactly this:
The “Right” has an abuse problem

So according to conservatives:

Beautiful happy women ❌

Certified Pedophile ✅

checks out tbh

Did you know Dora Richter and not Lili Elbe actually was the first to have gender-affirming bottom surgery though

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

In 1931, Elbe returned for her fourth surgery, to transplant a uterus and construct a vaginal canal. This made her one of the earliest transgender women to undergo a vaginoplasty surgery, a few weeks after Erwin Gohrbandt performed the experimental procedure on Dora Richter.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lili_Elbe

by a matter of a few weeks, and by the same surgeon

Elbe had an orchiectomy performed by Erwin Gohrbandt in 1930, it was the first of these surgeries she had.

[–] gandalf_der_12te@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 3 days ago (4 children)

is it just my impression or are there fewer trans men than trans fems? at least of what i personally happen to experience

which i find sad because tomboys/trans men(?) are hella hot. i'm not sure about trans men though because i rarely ever meet any.

[–] Nikki@lemmy.blahaj.zone 21 points 3 days ago (1 children)

trans girls in my experience are very vocal online, along with being constantly targeted in the news. so by virtue youll see more of us.

if you look up the numbers its about an even split though

yeah makes sense

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 20 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

despite historical over-reporting of trans women compared to trans men, by the numbers there are roughly the same number of trans men as trans women. Trans women are just given more attention by the media and society, and can be more represented in online and IRL trans groups for various reasons.

https://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/publications/trans-adults-united-states/

Of the 2.1 million adults who identify as transgender, 32.7% (698,500) are transgender women, 34.2% (730,500) are transgender men, and 33.1% (707,100) are transgender nonbinary adults.

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7906237/

Studies have consistently reported a greater prevalence of MTF than FTM.12 A recent meta-review found a ratio of ∼2:1.1 We had previously noted an increase over the past two decades in the percentage of FTM initiating sex hormone therapy compared with MTF.4 We have now reached the point wherein we are seeing at least as many FTM initiating sex hormone therapy as MTF.

[–] Sybilvane@lemmy.ca 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I find it so interesting that the distribution is roughly equal for each category. Roughly a third identify as male, female, and NB.

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I guess there's no reason to think the natural variation would be greater for one category or another. My only guess is that some people might identify as NB for political reasons that don't tie back to biology, but it's not clear, and if my memory is not wrong, among younger generations the number of people identifying as non-binary exceed the number of trans identifying people.

EDIT: among Gen Z, the percent of people identifying as trans is around 1.9 - 2% which is consistent with long-term, cross-cultural estimates of trans demographics of being between 0.5 - 2% of the population, but 7% of Gen Z identified as "non-binary" in 2024 according to the Household Pulse Survey:

[–] vithigar@lemmy.ca 14 points 3 days ago

One factor in this might be that it's traditionally more socially acceptable for a woman to adopt masculine habits than vice versa. There isn't as much social pressure to change how you identify if you're a tomboy.

[–] celeste@feddit.org 9 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Not really, actually from experience trans men tend to come out sooner on average so in youth groups there's usually more trans men. Online and in the discourse trans women are more present, but IRL in trans/queer spaces it's not the case. Edit: With age it should be around 50/50 in total
