Teachers and employees of all sorts are being fired for the same. One teacher got fired for simply quoting Kirk's now hilarious "acceptable deaths". And earlier, Musk was pressuring the Microsoft CEO on Shitter to fire employees that are critical of Kirk.

It's a complete Uno reverse of 2015

[–] yarr@feddit.nl 3 points 2 days ago

That's next level where just quoting Charie verbatim is enough to lose your job!

I remember when comics were overtly anti-fascist.

Many of the characters' entire personas are inextricably linked to anti-fascism.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Really depends on the writer. I know The Dark Knight Returns is beloved, but there's the themes in it that I'm not so sure about.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I guess I'm thinking more about classic comics from the 60s and 70s. Your X-Men and what have you.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

My point was that it's never been entirely one way or another. You can cite examples of aggressively progressive comic like X-men or the Superman-KKK comics, but the super hero format itself leans libertarian and if the writer isn't careful, they end up supporting that or worse, a libertarian writer promotes those ideas while hiding behind the canon of super heroes. I've heard some batshit takes from otherwise progressive comicbook readers.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

OK, but specifically back when comics were first coming out and becoming popular. I don't think there were pro-fascist comics in the 60s in 70s, for one because a big chunk of their market were hippies. But maybe I'm wrong.

but the super hero format itself leans libertarian

You're probably not wrong, which is why the ones that lean into it (like The Boys or Invincible) always seem more realistic.

[–] Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 25 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Truly sad how many "respectable" companies are backing such an evil fascist racist zealot

[–] Jerb322@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The fucking Green Bay Packers are putting some kind of exhibit for him!?! Like seriously, WTF! What do they have to do with any of it?

Fuck fascism.!..

[–] Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Theyre all scared shitless of any retribution. Cowardly lot

[–] Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 143 points 3 days ago (4 children)

So, the entire fucking mediasphere is suddenly bending the knee to right-wing bigotry? What the actual fuck is happening right now?

[–] Olhonestjim@lemmy.world 101 points 3 days ago

Billionaire fascists bought literally every media voice they could lay hands on.

[–] Texas_Hangover@lemmy.radio 24 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Media goes where the wind blows. Remember when they were falling all over themselves to be the most "supportive" of lgbt a few years back? Rainbows everywhere.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

Or when they were all on board for Bush II's wars?

[–] kibiz0r@midwest.social 34 points 3 days ago

“Suddenly”

At DC Comics, we place the highest value on our creators and community and affirm the right to peaceful, individual expression of personal viewpoints.

Your actions say otherwise DC. You openly supported terrorism and hate speech when you decided to harm an employee who was a member of a vulnerable minority being actively terrorized. The level of evil and hurt you just subjected this employee to is unforgivable. I will never touch another product or property of yours again.

Shame on you, you evil, nazi accomplices.

[–] Tiger666@lemmy.ca 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

If nine nazies are sitting at a table and someone sits down there are ten nazies.

The saying goes.. 9 people sitting at a table and 1 Nazi joins, there's ten Nazis.

[–] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 155 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Those "fuck your feelings" people really need delicate treatment, huh?

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 58 points 3 days ago

It was always projection. They don't give a fuck about YOUR feeling, but they are the most sensitive of snowflakes on the planet.

[–] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 122 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Remember when the Right was against cancel culture? Cracker Barrel remembers

[–] Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 59 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They've never been against cancel culture. They just don't like being the ones canceled.

[–] No_Money_Just_Change@feddit.org 10 points 3 days ago

They never were canceled. They did not like that free speech allowed for people to express that they suck, so they started whining without a basis

[–] grue@lemmy.world 37 points 3 days ago

"Cancel culture" was never anything but right-wing projection. It is purely a propaganda term meant to demonize the practice of applying well-deserved consequences to bigoted and abusive behavior.

Retaliation against normal people for calling out hate isn't "cancel culture;" it's just more abuse.

[–] FanciestPants@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

If cancel culture was really a problem for them, they would have been screaming on Fox every night while Colin Kaepernick was being shunned by every NFL team.

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 87 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (4 children)

“At DC Comics, we place the highest value on our creators and community and affirm the right to peaceful, individual expression of personal viewpoints. Posts or public comments that can be viewed as promoting hostility or violence are inconsistent with DC’s standards of conduct,” a DC spokesperson said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

The lesson seems to be this:

Do like Charlie Kirk and start your own organization, because as long as you're the one in charge, you can say whatever the living fuck horrible thing you want (Gretchen Felker-Martin didn't even say anything really terrible compared to Kirk!), and since you're the head of organization, no one can shut you down for what you have to say.

Here's hoping Gretchen Felker-Martin starts her own comic book group and starts platforming people who aren't going to put up with fucking fascist horseshit.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 31 points 3 days ago

The trouble is, that only works when you're spewing the kind of hateful and violent rhetoric that rich elites want to hear. There's a firehose of money being aimed at fascist influencers.

In contrast, you don't see nearly as many anti-fascist or egalitarian influencers because the economics don't work: the people who support the message don't have any fucking money.

[–] Mamdani_Da_Savior@lemmy.world 16 points 4 days ago

If my employer were to fire me over a social media post in relation to Charlie Kirk

I'd make sure the right feels my pain

[–] bufalo1973@piefed.social 9 points 3 days ago

McFarlane 2.0

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

Also she's not an uncontroversial author. I've only read Manhunt from her and it's unapologetic and rough. With how raw she writes she's probably a great comic writer

[–] Postmortal_Pop@lemmy.world 46 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Red hood would have shot Kirk.

[–] slaneesh_is_right@lemmy.org 5 points 3 days ago

And bring his head over to ben shapiro

[–] BanMe@lemmy.world 33 points 3 days ago

The party that ostensibly hates cancel culture strikes again

[–] Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world 48 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

So, are they going to fire everyone who supports Kirk or Trump too?

Sounds like they were peacefully expressing their viewpoints.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 6 points 3 days ago

i see mountains of lawsuits against school districts soon, companies for firing over kirk drama.

Yes wouldn't want to see violence being promoted by DC Comics. DC Comics are never violent clearly. It's absurd to suggest otherwise. All DC heroes operate under the strictest tenants of pacifism.

[–] slaneesh_is_right@lemmy.org 24 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Especially red hood who has two guns.

And is known to murder criminals.

[–] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 25 points 3 days ago

Abject fucking cowardice.

[–] wulrus@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (2 children)

This is insane. We'll end up with this white-washed, boring mediocrity.

Same with that MAGA-actress from The Mandalorian. What she said wasn't even as radical, just bought into the whole election fraud conspiracy, iirc. Now we have a formerly good show where every new character AND their actor are basically PC-principal from South Park. The left failed to support her there because she was a bit of an ass, supporting a bigger ass, but no laws were broken and she fit the role perfectly: Not that smart, badass, hardly an ally when you have no other choice.

Enlightened centrists are left to create our art and literature. Well, at least the 1800s and 1900s produced a lifetime supply. But a contemporary reflection of our society, of our politics, like "1984", like "Der Untertan", like "Im Westen nichts Neues", that used to be a huge part of it, and it's slipping away.

Fiction is an actor we should not pull out of public discourse. It has been crucial to it, probably long before the first written word. Unless a crime is committed, let them write!

[–] masterofn001@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago

You mean power Christian principle.

(The new season is not friendly to Fascists)

[–] shreyan@lemmy.cif.su -3 points 3 days ago

I doubt the show was ever good because it's made by disney and "safe for china," but I get your point.

The censorship and abuse of power on both sides needs to end. Barring that, any smart person should just recognize the tribalism for what it is and use it as a way to differentiate themselves from the average idiot.

Stupid people don't magically become smart because there's more of them, although stupid people will not understand or accept this.
