Seeing the low-buck AI pic text spam everyone is posting and eating up I’m surprised the bar is even that high.

Oh yeah? Well...

Eat my shorts.

I grew up in an era where adults would smugly tell kids "Don't believe everything you hear on TV" and then within a decade I found out that those same adults believe everything they see on the internet (so long as it conforms to their previously held beliefs).

You've gotta meet people where they're at, so if a smug and sarcastic "oh, it was on the internet, it must be true" is what it takes, then that's what it takes. Word of advice is to be fair and be consistent. Eventually they'll recognize they can either be in the joke or in on it, it's their choice.

My mom doesn't believe Tiananmen Square Massacre happened, but still believe random bullshit from wechat like "Democrats rUiNiNg NYC"... "mIgRaNt cRiSiS" even tho we are (legal) immigrants and probably get lumped together in the eyes of the far right.

Also, "antidepressants don't work" and I just need to "go outside"... outside where ICE is swarming the streets and we're aren't white. Thanks mom, very helpful... 🙃

I am so glad I have reasonable parents. A lot of my aunts and uncles who are still alive fully believe everything posted on the internet.

This is fake. Picard isn't born yet. Destroyed by pure logic

[–] Malgas@beehaw.org 3 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

So we're just going to ignore that he has time-traveled on multiple occasions?

[–] lugal@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 6 hours ago

He did, sure, but never in the year 2021

Are you saying that the tweet calling itself fake is fake and therefore real?

Boom, destroyed by paradox

[–] lugal@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 8 hours ago

I'm saying there are five lights. That's what I was told and the only thing I know for certain.

First thing I do when a journalist writes about a study is trying to find the paper and read the abstract. That usually end up giving me some more articles and different takes on the study too when going through the search results.

[–] okwhateverdude@lemmy.world 7 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

this_is_the_way.png

Sometimes the headline and the article sensationalize the actual research. Sometimes the study is flawed in some way, but the journo doesn't actually catch it. And then of course because the news site wants readers to not bounce, they won't even link the study. So frustrating and obnoxious.

[–] FundMECFS@anarchist.nexus 2 points 12 hours ago

The article is often repeating the university press release. And the university press departments often try to maximise clout ie. funding so write stuff that is exaggerated sensationalised or straight up innacurate.

This is true, if you don't believe me google is free, do your own research

[–] Johanno@feddit.org 2 points 13 hours ago

While actually trying to do research using Google or any other search engine is better than 99% of people do,

You have to watch out. If you only search for one thing and not the argument of the opposition you will get a bias.
