People from Berlin talk this way

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

I can't tell if this is a fact or parody song lyrics, but I'm reading it to the tune of an Aerosmith song

You're can't just say Jandalf on Lemmy and not expect denim robes!

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 40 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The beacons are lit! Jondor calls for aid!

[–] MajorMajormajormajor@lemmy.ca 26 points 4 days ago

We've had one pixel, yes. What about second pixel?

Gil-galad was an elven-king;
Of him the harpers badly sing
For none can rightly say his name—
Jill misappropriates his fame

Listen Legoland, I'm not from the Kingdom of Jondor.

I'll save this meme as a jiff.

[–] MyNameIsIgglePiggle@sh.itjust.works 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I laughed at the meme..my wife is like "what?"

I sighed and said are you sure you want me to explain it?

She was like, do you want to?

I'm like this has many layers. None of which are in a direction you care about.

"It's a comic where JRR Tolkien says "Gandalf" is actually pronounced "Jandalf", a reference to the dumb side of the gif/jif debate. Also someone in the comments posted a denim-clad Gandalf since denim versions of things are often called that thing but with a "J" at the start of the name."

[–] MyNameIsIgglePiggle@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

You see though, I would have to explain the gif / jif debate. Then I would have to explain what a gif is

Then I would have to explain what a Gandalf is.

And the way I would have to explain what a Gandalf is, is to remind her of the character with a stick from the lego game where you had to get up to swap characters... But he is also from lord of the rings.

Then I have to explain what lotr is. And how it's different from Harry Potter.

And in the end she would say. "That's stupid"

She must be insanely attractive.

[–] MyNameIsIgglePiggle@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I told her "someone said you must be insanely attractive"

She said why?

I said because of that post I made the other day about gif jif Gandalf jandalf.

She said "why would they say I must be insanely attractive because of that post?"

I said... Because you must be insanely attractive for me to put up with it. But they said you must be insanely attractive!

"That doesn't make sense" she said. "I'm insanely adorable."

🤦

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Haha.

Well, she does sound adorable and you clearly communicate. Lucky you. Am kinda jealous, tbh.

All the best!

[–] Flocklesscrow@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago

It's pronounced NarNIA

[–] lath@piefed.social 7 points 4 days ago

Read as Iandalf.

"Gandalf" was a dwarf in Norse mythology. Tolkien didn't invent the name.

[–] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 6 points 4 days ago

The word is pronounced "giraffeics"

[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 4 points 4 days ago

I believe it's pronounced gyrafs.

[–] olafurp@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

For the curious "Gandalf" is made up of two old norse words "gandr" meaning a walking stick or staff and "álfr" moaning an elf. The movies pronounce it correctly of course.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Imagine if JK Rowling would do that last bit for us.

[–] rustyfish@piefed.world 2 points 4 days ago

This stresses me so much.

[–] DrDystopia@lemy.lol 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)
