Explanation: While Romans were immensely chauvinistic, they didn't have a strong conception of 'race' as we would understand it in the modern day. To the Romans, what mattered was how you spoke, how you dressed, and how you acted - not what your phenotype was.

Interestingly enough, that shows, in a strange way, the level of differentiation Romans were willing to employ.
Carthage, in the Third Punic War, was utterly obliterated over absurd reasons, because Carthage was a polity they had long-feuded with.
Yet other Punic city-states in the area were allied with Rome during the war, and received no harm done to them, despite the fact that they burned the whole fucking Punic city of Carthage down over ancient offenses. Not only that, but the native North African Numidians were aligned with the Romans during the war, and honored accordingly.
No racism - just good, old fashioned, murderous blood feuds over names and borders on a map! Holsum!
