Too many people pearl clutching today over worries of retributive violence, as if the fascists aren't already going to be committing that violence on us in the near future regardless. It's not too early to say that this scumbag deserved much worse and I'm glad he got rocked so publicly. Mods I'll understand if you delete this and I'm truly sorry for the trouble if you do, I just need a personal break today from the media cacophony of liberals collectively reconciling with the realization that we live in an abnormally and horrifically violent society.

I feel like THIS is retributive violence. Democratic politicians were earlier shot dead in their homes, so I'd say that republicans (who are themselves endorsing political violence) shouldn't be able to feel safe either.

Kirk promoted gun violence to justify the 2nd amendment. It would be poetic justice if the killer was someone whose loved one died from gun violence and chose to give him a taste of his own opinion.

The Republicans are only going to talk about violence against them. They have a victim mentality and Charlie boy is now a martyr.

[–] 13igTyme@piefed.social 14 points 23 hours ago

I hope they all end up being martyrs.

Dude, I watched a youtube video of local news stations reporting over the shooting. The youtube comments are completely deranged and 100% written by AI. Somehow charlie kirk is being equated to MLK Jr.

I feel for all the people who will have to live with the fear and trauma of witnessing this. I’m glad nobody else was hurt. This type of violence is a consequence of our gun-obsessed and highly politically polarized culture, which Kirk had a massive hand in making worse. I hope we can focus on the damage his rhetoric has caused and those who were taken in by him can use this as a learning moment.

They’re already committing violence. It’s just directed against brown people, we shouldn’t forget that. The level they expand and escalate it to is what’s up for debate.

I have to admit, the Republicans were right about the second amendment. We need to be (legally) buying guns and (legally) protesting with them.

Judge just now ruled that banning open carry in Florida is unconstitutional. Our shithead governor is pushing for a new law. Like about every other conservative, they don't think the rest of us are armed.

dude had a big face or small face depending on how you define face, i see why the shooter didn't want to overcomplicate and went for the neck

If he got shot in the head - no vital organs would've been hit tho.

It was while he was being asked about gun violence that he was shot, the student says.

Unbelievable.

Specifically, he was in the middle of spinning a question about mass shootings into a dog whistle about "gang violence".

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 64 points 1 day ago (1 children)

mass shootings committed by trans people, specifically

[–] Glide@lemmy.ca 96 points 1 day ago* (last edited 17 hours ago) (4 children)

The order of events as I've been seeing online:

Videos circulating on social media showed an attender at the student event on Wednesday asking Charlie Kirk: “Do you know how many transgender Americans have been mass shooters over the last 10 years?”

In response, Kirk said: “Too many,” as the crowd clapped.

In a follow-up question, the attender asked: “Do you know how many mass shooters there have been in America over the last 10 years?”

Kirk replied: “Counting or not counting gang violence?”

His last act on earth was cracking a joke about how only queers and poors are involved in gun violence, at which point he was shot.

Thanks for extra context. These people really don't seem to care about others suffering. Also I don't normally hear gang violence and mass shooters together. Gang violence is generally targeted and not focused on the most amount of bodies.

Regardless I'm getting tired of this all, and it's likely only beginning.

[–] Schmoo@slrpnk.net 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's a regularly used debate tactic of the right. He was going to imply that whatever number the student came up with for mass shootings was inflated because the criteria was too vague and erroneously counts gang violence. He would then have used this to simultaneously downplay the seriousness of mass shootings and suggest that trans people represent a larger proportion of mass shooters than they actually do. It was his way of discrediting the argument that the student was making; that trans people are actually underrepresented in the population of mass shooters. The reason for the student making this argument - if you don't know - is that Charlie Kirk has blamed trans people for mass shootings in the past, jumping on the conservative bandwagon that always transvestigates mass shooters because they believe they are a trans conspiracy.

You know how in certain types of antihero drama where the protagonist is an assassin, they're always careful to make the target as cartoonishly obnoxious as possible at a kind of cue to let the audience know that they're not supposed to feel bad for them?

They could use this verbatim as the script.
