A place to meme about the glorious ROMAN EMPIRE (and Roman Republic, and Roman Kingdom)! Byzantines tolerated! The HRE is not.

Always been an Murmillo kind of guy myself. But the Retiarius would be second choice for me.

Gues I'm just a basic bitch.

You're in good company, Murmillo is a classic ๐Ÿ™

Retiarius is... unique. But that's why it still captures the imagination today

I think we can all agree that the scissor has both the funniest name AND the coolest impractical weapon.

Are we sure murmillo and secutor aren't the same thing?

Difference is the helmet - many Roman gladiator types were highly standardized by norms to give the audience what they wanted. The Secutor, by being nearly blind in that helmet (but immune to being poked in the face with a trident), formed the perfect 'brute' to go against the light, unarmored Retiarius. The Murmillo often went against the Retiarius, but was not as specialized for that function.

It's crazy that there not only is an answer, but that it's logical. It also explains why murmillo has leather armor for his legs while the other is only padded. Padding is enough against slashing and is lighter (and stabbing legs with a sword or spear is harder), but they wouldn't be much use at all against a trident.
