Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

What about those sanctions on Russia, Donald?

[–] Gates9@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

BRICS is like half the world’s gdp, their economies are expanding faster than any western nation. This is because they invest in their economy, their infrastructure, their labor force. Instead of tariffs and saber rattling, we should do that.

But we won’t. Because our aristocracy are exploitative bastards who would rather rule a pile of shit than allow the average worker to have a decent life.

Speaking as an American, we fought a revolution to overthrow the last aristocracy that treated us this way. I know many other nations have as well.

They’re not giving us much of a choice.

[–] Melchior@feddit.org 1 points 47 minutes ago

WTF? First of all BRICS has 28.7% of global nominal GDP and 38.35% PPP.

R=Russia which is fighting a massive war in Ukraine

I=India common fighting against Pakistan including some this year

Please actually read up on other countries. The US has a lot of problems and is getting worse, but that still leaves the US in a pretty decent place globally, seeing as it still is insanely rich.

Sanction The Planet

And I, as an European, ask him to kick the bucket ASAP.

[–] Obi@sopuli.xyz 6 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Unfortunately I'm not sure that would bring back our "good old American cousins" (if that was ever actually a thing). Seems many in that country are more than happy to follow in his hateful footsteps.

The fascist cancer will continue to spread until it is physically removed from the host

[–] Obi@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 hours ago

Yep, and unfortunately we have similar, if smaller/younger trends at home..

What about you go fuck yourself instead? 100%, 200%, doesn't really matter. Just go fuck yourself.

Alright. We can do that as soon as you start flooding Ukraine with US weapons to fight Russia, deal?

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Everyone hates Trump but cutting off Russian money is needed to save Ukraine. What was the point of the EU cutting off Russian gas if Russia just sells it for more to India?

[–] CAVOK@lemmy.world 5 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago) (2 children)

Not sure if gas is the same as crude, but if it is then the price is capped so that Russia doesn't make any money off it. Then India can buy from Russia and sell it on for profit to the market, meaning that India profits instead of Russia, and the rest of us gets to enjoy fairly normal prices when it comes to oil and gas. Almost everyone is happy.

Which is why India is rightfully pissed at Trump for sabotaging this setup, probably because it was done under Biden, when they've been doing exactly what everyone wanted, and expected.

Edit: India is pissed because not only did Trump sabotage the setup, he's also punishing India for doing something that the setup permitted and encouraged. Turkieye (or how you spell it) is doing the same as India IIRC.

he’s also punishing India for doing something that the setup permitted and encouraged.

Trump must be punishing India for their recent visit to China. If India becomes friends with China then who is going to contain China?

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago) (1 children)

if it is then the price is capped so that Russia doesn't make any money off it.

The price isn't capped but it doesn't matter that they sell it for less profit.

They sell it to India for cash which funds their war against Ukraine. India likes the cheap resources so doesn't care that they are funding Russia's invasion.

[–] CAVOK@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

I think it is, but feel free to educate me. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_Russian_crude_oil_price_cap_sanctions

If they sell it for the same as it cost to extract and transport it then there's nothing left over to fund their war.

It'll never be perfect, but if we tank our economies just to make a point, what good is that? We're able give a lot to Ukraine because we can keep the energy cost fairly low.

Rather the whole world (russia also even it pains to say it..) should unite and drive every single yankee soldier out of the world back to U.S
