She still gasps when I slide my phone in her pocket.

[–] blitzen@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 week ago

Device is 2mm taller and essentially the same width and the outgoing model. The increase in screen size is really not coming by way of a bigger phone.

I’ll sit here with my mini 13 until you bring out a new mini.

In the meantime I’ve saved thousands.

But it IS smaller.

Oh you mean in those dimensions. Pfft.

My 13 mini took a swim this summer 😭, the only carrier unlocked phone I could get local was a iPhone 15. I’m hoping maybe I can find someone who can repair the water damage from my 13 mini and I can gift the 15 to my wife.

[–] Link@rentadrunk.org 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Isn’t the 13 mini meant to survive in water?

[–] TORFdot0@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

I thought so, but it got condensation inside the camera sensor and then the battery started running way hot. It actually didn’t stop working until the next day

i can start buying base models again

Still working out how to feel about this keynote.

I no longer feel like the Pro/Pro Max is the best value. Seriously, what is the base 17 missing? It's a weaker chip but who cares, the 12/13 are still suitable for most tasks. Hell, I'll reach for my Galaxy S10 (2019) over my iPhone 16 Pro Max (2024) for a couple things. Like typing. If the best of Apple Intelligence can't figure out trace typing and a six-year-old Android can, what good is the best iPhone? At least for that.

I think it's weird that they no longer offer an iPhone Plus. I suppose it is true, after all, that phones were getting smaller until they realised we could watch porn on them. Then they started getting bigger. Everyone's trying to ban/age-gate porn now (and I'm not saying that's a bad thing) so Apple's response is to shy away from big phones? I think that gives those of us holding out for another Mini some hope.

Anyway, the base iPhone 17 is basically a reissue of the iPhone 16 Pro but with one fewer camera, and arguably improvements across the board. If you got an iPhone 16 Pro and you aren't using 5X telephoto, I wonder how you're feeling about now. Probably real curious about trade-in values. I thought about it. But I don't wanna be one of those jackasses who upgrades every year. I came from the 13, and I'm thinking if the 19 doesn't knock my socks off, I'll get the 20/X2 and hold onto it for 5 years. If the 19 looks good, I'll get that. As a Stephen King fan (in the Dark Tower, gunslinger Roland's band of merry adventurers was called the Ka'tet of 19) it's gonna be real tempting. Gonna have to get a Ka decal for it. Maybe a Tower decal, too.

I remember when I had a Galaxy Note 2 and people thought I was ridiculous because it was so big. I wish I could go back to something that smol.

[–] vga@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 week ago

Great, another gigantic block that almost fits hand/pocket.

  • iPhone 17 - 3629 mAh battery
  • iPhone 17 Air - 3149 mAh battery

so only around 17.25% smaller battery than the base model. That ain't as bad as I thought. The Air also has 12GB RAM vs 8GB on the base model.

Now the lack of the stereo speaker and ultra wide camera at this price point... that is a weird trade off. I really like the Air but I think they could have instead easily make a new Mini model with this time a good battery life.

[–] sbeak@sopuli.xyz 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Do note that the Air will have a larger screen (which will drain more battery), will have worse thermals, and has the “Pro” chip (but with one less GPU core than the one in the Pro phones, but it will definitely run pretty hot)

I know. Also it also has more efficient modem. Battery capacity is basically identical to the iPhone 15 Pro. Apple only quotes video playback for battery longevity which is quite useless metric as this heavily relies on the efficiency of the HW decoder so I'll see after reviews. What I'm certain about though is that the battery life won't be worse than the Pixel 10.

We have to go back
