That's why I'm on the fediverse, here at least there still are quite many humans around.

Sam Altman is worried the dead internet theory is coming true the same way the Sacklers are worried there might be an opioid crisis.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 18 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

sacklers love the dead opiods theory, they hope everyone dies off from opiods so they cant sue them.

[–] stabby_cicada@slrpnk.net 92 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Oh no, says Sam, the eminently predictable consequences of my own actions have come to pass through no fault of my own.

And he's not wrong. If I search for any topic on Google without narrowing my search very carefully, the first page will consist of one AI generated autoresponse and ten AI generated articles from SEO-exploiting link farms.

If I search for advice on Reddit I have to narrow it down to posts from before 2022 or comments will be full of users who see a question and think "it is both useful and appropriate for me to plug this question into ChatGPT and post its answer."

(Edit: oh, shit, I forgot, Reddit also inserts links to AI-generated answers in old comments. So I'm reading an old comment and think the author linked to something relevant but the link actually triggers Reddit Answers to supply AI garbage. Ugh.)

Product reviews have been 95% spam and ad copy for decades.

I read fucking fanfiction and half the stories that started in 2025 show signs of being at least edited by LLMs.

If that's not the shambling zombie corpse of the Internet pretending to be human I don't know what it is.

...yaaaaawn. Again, Sam Altman is not worried about anything. This is just more AI hype.... <.<

[–] FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 1 week ago

He’s scared his product might be just too gosh darn good.

[–] Squiddork@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Any money this arsehole said this either to put twitter and grok down or to take an extreme approach "AI is much more sophisticated than we thought hurr" either way the motivations the same: profit.

[–] deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz 49 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Sam Altman: somebody put shit in my pants!

[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 week ago

Comments like this make me wish we had Lemmy Gold.

[–] bort@piefed.world 45 points 1 week ago (1 children)

He’s just upset that his ai is training on its own ai slop and is becoming exponentially worse

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 22 points 1 week ago

And he also paid for the above article to keep engagement going.

Endless grift on all fronts.

[–] defaultusername@lemmy.dbzer0.com 42 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Oh, no. Did the guy who chose to move fast and break things end up moving fast and breaking things? Who could've seen that coming?

I'm sure his solution is going to be to move fast and break things.

[–] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 21 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

That's the trouble with tech start-ups. They never move fast and break capitalism.

"I made a sandwich and was shocked that a sandwich was created!"

[–] CaptainBlinky@lemmy.myserv.one 37 points 1 week ago

"Did I kill the Internet and therefore my profits? Please fix it, governments!" Asshole.

[–] null_dot@lemmy.dbzer0.com 35 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The internet is already an undead version of its former glory.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah, I do long for those good old days. I thought they the slow connections from then were bad but now I so wish I was back in those days.

[–] aesthelete@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

It used to be the connection speeds were preventing you from enjoying great sites, now we've got reasonably good connection speeds and terrible sites.

Who wished on the monkey's paw?

[–] Binturong@lemmy.ca 31 points 1 week ago

This guy is constantly whining about the consequences of his own unrestricted capitalism. Just STOP IT then, dude! Take your, money and fuck all the way off. Better yet, governments TAKE his money away as a punishment for 'disrupting' society.

[–] rayquetzalcoatl@lemmy.world 27 points 1 week ago

Whatever, billionaire moron. Fuck off. Freaks this like one played a big part in killing what could have been a fantastic tool for the human race. A way to communally store and access troves of human knowledge quickly and easily. A way to communicate with each other instantly across huge distances.

But no. Had to try and make a quick buck off it.

Fucking dickhead.

[–] ATPA9@feddit.org 24 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Maybe he realized that the easiest way to get training data is now poisoned with his own ai shit.

[–] lemmeLurk@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago

I think they knew that always. It's just not good for selling the product. That's the problems with LLMs, they are designed to give you the most likely answer, not the most correct answer, because that's mich harder to train for.

[–] DicJacobus@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago (1 children)

the internet is so shitty I retreated to a couple of kind of oldschool "forums" and primarily exist on there now.

yeah the content is scattered and I might not find very many people with some specific interest, but I know they are real people and we're not getting swarmed by bots, ads, and glowies

[–] Bennyboybumberchums@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I got a ban from reddit and you know what? I actually feel better for not being there anymore. I never actually realised just how much of an affect that endless drama on there was having on my mental health.

I think back to those old school forums, and it really was simpler time. People were more genuine, and hadnt been utterly mind fucked by all the algorithms poisoning their opinions about movies they hadnt seen and books they hadnt read.

You could even meet people IRL from some places, and it wasnt a big deal. Now everyone is a rapist, murder bot with a weird bum fetish, and meeting anyone is an insane idea.

Just goes to show, things are always great right up until the point the "cool kids" get in on it and make it popular.

[–] DicJacobus@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

Im also here because of a reddit perma.

at first I was sad because I wasnt able to participate in niche communities that are important to me, but after a while I found other ways of talking to people about those things,

"Just goes to show, things are always great right up until the point the “cool kids” get in on it and make it popular."

thats how I feel about the internet in general, 90s, 00s, early 2010s the world wasnt terminally online, just the nerdy and geeky people were. But now that everyone is online, the reality is that most people are too untrustworthy or too stupid to be trusted with the internet because well, you see everything that happened.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 20 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

only because your AI is losing money, and not generating profit as you hyped out to be.

[–] devolution@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago

Who knew Skynet would mostly make shitty AI art, cheat on college exams, and spread misinformation rather than launch nukes and send T-800's?

[–] LiveLM@lemmy.zip 18 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I need Dead CEO Theory to start popping off

[–] ShaggyBlarney@lemmy.ca 15 points 1 week ago

"I'm worried that everything I say you should be afraid about AI is true, so give me all the money and I'll continue saying it." - Clammy Sammy Altman (probably)

[–] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

"We have just the right AI tool to solve this problem"

[–] Binturong@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago

Scam Faultman

[–] SirDankbud@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 week ago

He was never worried about shit. His comments about dead internet theory are an attack on Musk and shitter, nothing more.

[–] Cocopanda@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

We might fight with each other. But at least we’re meat bags. Unlike these Bucket of bolts.

[–] XOXOX@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Im here, and excruciatingly human.

[–] godfish@lemy.lol 6 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Since I have not seen anyone from the fediverse in person i still can not be sure that you all`s ain't bots.

I too am a cat

[–] usernameusername@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I'm sorry, but as a human developed by my human parents, I do not have the hability to determine that.

[–] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 week ago

Everyone on Lemmy is a bot, except you

[–] tuhriel 5 points 1 week ago

So...who else gets a major "Ted Faro" vibe from Altman?

[–] marduk@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 1 week ago
[–] Tartas1995@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Makes me wonder when he will take ai safety seriously (safety and ethics)

[–] 4am@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

He won’t as long as the alternative still makes his company valuable

[–] Tartas1995@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 week ago

I thought so too but the dead Internet doesn't seem to do anything but make his company look bad, so...

Apparently he is speaking before thinking at times.
