Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

Yeah, it's time for windows to die. My windows 10 computer i'm pretty sure everything on it would work on linux, so i'll switch it over to Mint in a few weeks.

    [–] DegenerationIP@lemmy.world 7 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

A lot of stuff does run.

    • Steam (proton)
    • Heroic Launcher (Epic Games, Gog, Prime gaming)
    • Wine for additional Windows based Programs

The only Thing that I do Miss, is Anti-Cheat Software for some games. Thats the only reason to keel dualboot, to Launch that Games on Windows. Besides that - screw Windows.

    [–] Limonene@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

I got GOG Galaxy working in Steam, through Proton, as an "Add a non-Steam Game". I'll have to try Heroic Launcher.

I installed Pop OS on some old hardware "just to see what it's like" 2 weeks ago and am already planning to switch my primary over by this weekend. If I can be done with Windows, I'll be a happy man.

    [–] ZkhqrD5o@lemmy.world 9 points 5 hours ago

What do computers and air conditioning have in common? Both stop working when you open windows.

    [–] Keyboard@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

I wonder if I can get them to delete of the shit they took from my fucking comp already? I moved to Linux mint a short while ago and despite some minor limitations, I haven't looked back since.

    [–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago

    "New"

I could swear it has been happening in window's temporary folders for like 3 years now.

    [–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 26 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

As soon as Windows is installed, Microsoft owns the computer.

    [–] Retro_unlimited@lemmy.world 19 points 6 hours ago

It want from β€œMy Computer” to β€œThis PC”.

    [–] MTK@lemmy.world 31 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

My method has always been the same, it it always works eventually.

When my devices go against my will, I lean real close and whisper "I'm gonna fucking disconnect you and then throw you in a river" and usually after a few hours of threats I get what I want. I guess the debugging and manual reading and whatnot does help a bit, but I suspect it is mostly the fear that fixes the issues.

    [–] ignotum@lemmy.world 17 points 10 hours ago

Oh so you're the one behind all the electronics waste in my local river?

Please throw it in the bin or install linux on it from now on

    [–] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 102 points 13 hours ago (3 children)

If only there was some sort of movement of gracious people willing to donate their expertise and time to write software and allow the users to fully control it by giving away the source code. That'd fix everything!

    [–] errer@lemmy.world 8 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

If only my work would listen to you

(We make Windows-only software so a transition to Linux any time soon ain’t happening)

    [–] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 6 points 7 hours ago

You have my sincere condolences, buddy.

    [–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 53 points 12 hours ago (5 children)

But... but... then you'd have to think about what you're doing and *gasp* develop a basic understanding of the technology that runs your life! Who has time for that nerd shit?

    [–] thatonecoder@lemmy.ca 40 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

To be fair, some people are burnt out to degrees most of humanity struggles to comprehend. Of course, there are always the lazy butts; HOWEVER, you cannot generalize at all.

    [–] Catoblepas@piefed.blahaj.zone 22 points 11 hours ago

Nah man, those stupid ass single parents working multiple jobs need to get their priorities straight! /s

    [–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 13 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

So basically, if you're sawing trees with a blunt saw and somebody suggests sharpening the saw, you'll say "I can't, I got trees to cut!"?

    [–] Sc00ter@lemmy.zip 15 points 10 hours ago (4 children)

    Almost.

Imagine youre cutting trees with an axe and someone tells you theres a tool out there that can do it better, but you have to learn how to use it to become efficient with it. And you dont have time to learn new tool because capitalism says you have to have that tree cut down right now.

    [–] BCsven@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

That may have been true for Linux 10 years ago, but now it is easier to install than Windows, and much faster to install. It may mean the axe handle is a different colour, but it chops the same or better.

    [–] Sc00ter@lemmy.zip 1 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

    faster and easier to install

Youre assuming youre talking to someone who installs their OS and doesnt open a box with an OS already installed

    [–] BCsven@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 hours ago

I mean Dell, Lenovo, HP, system76, etc sell laptops with Ubuntu or Pop!_OS installed

    [–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago

There is never a good time to change things. You just have to start somewhere. And I'm not saying everybody should do it right now. But the more people do it the quicker we build critical mass.

Not everyone has that aptitude. It isn’t always a matter of motivation.

    [–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 1 points 5 hours ago

I do it out of pure spite. Next step: replacing Android with PostmarketOS.

Never heard of OpenWRT before, is it nice?

    [–] negativenull@lemmy.world 21 points 10 hours ago

Linux based embedded router OS. Yes, it's nice.

    [–] Hond@piefed.social 41 points 13 hours ago (3 children)

You can install linux via bullets now? how cool is that?

    [–] teft@piefed.social 23 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Not bullets. That’s a windows thing. Linux uses USB arrows.

    [–] wabasso@lemmy.ca 9 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Oh geez that’s really what that is. What’s this from?

    [–] teft@piefed.social 10 points 11 hours ago

    Hawkeye the tv series.

    it just works

    [–] Gloria@sh.itjust.works 19 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Is that how Americans make screenshot?

    [–] Steamymoomilk@sh.itjust.works 7 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago) (1 children)

Wheres this photo even from?? I would love to know, its peak shitlisting material

    [–] The_Picard_Maneuver@piefed.world 17 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

There's a really small credit at the bottom from 1998, and I found some more from the same photoshoot just now. It looks like people have tried to find the source of this before, but I'm not seeing any answer as to WHY, lol

    [–] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 6 points 10 hours ago

    Stock imagery, probably.

    [–] ExtremeUnicorn@feddit.org 6 points 10 hours ago

    Amazing. Thanks.

    Nooo! Skully!

    [–] tourist@lemmy.world 19 points 12 hours ago (6 children)

they've got all the telemetry to infer what you're doing and what your screen looks like

But for some reason, they still need to screenshot dudes fucking up excel spreadsheets and lowballing people on Facebook marketplace for 8 hours

    [–] real_squids@sopuli.xyz 2 points 7 hours ago

I doubt their telemetry (if enabled) is good enough for targeted ads. Recall can give them a massive amount of information from your entire screen, it's a massive improvement for them.
