I love the idea of ekranoplans / ground effect vehicles... but I suspect the reality ain't all that great, or else they would have taken off by now (pun intended).

I'm given to understand that they're too reliant on even terrain/calm waters.
I remember crossing the English Channel by hovercraft, and they came with sick bags, just like airplanes. Which became necessary if there was even the slightest swell.
One of the newer James Bond books featured one, I think it was running across the Caspian Sea as there was nowhere else it could feasibly run
There's a pretty cool mission in World in Conflict involving these:
