Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is far ahead in the polls in Saxony-Anhalt, a poll revealed on Thursday, just one year before the eastern state holds elections to its regional parliament.

This is all a symptom of allowing billionaires to exist.

β€œLook the other way! That immigrant wants to steal your pennies!”, exclaimed the dragon brooding on his mountain-like hoard of the People’s gold.

[–] EightBitBlood@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

The problem is we gave those dragons internet access so they now use it exclusively to spend their gold to convince everyone in the world that immigrants want to steal their pennies so they should totaly elect strong immigrant eating dragons to every office.

It's a bit more than that, it's a symptom of rampant misinformation, a distrust in political leadership, a lack of empathy towards others, increasing wealth inequality, etc.

[–] BedSharkPal@lemmy.ca 23 points 3 days ago (1 children)

A huge chunk of those issues are triggered by billionaires though. It's crazy how much it all traces back to a small number of insanely wealthy people.

And the same rich assholes keep launching smear campaigns against anyone who dares proposing or even making decent politics. Every country is being run more like a Russian oligarchy each day. The information age with the internet and smart phones in every pocket centralizes power in ways that were unimaginable before in ways we didnβ€˜t anticipate. The same tech that could democratize more processes is chaining us.

[–] Pechente@feddit.org 47 points 3 days ago (2 children)

In Thuringia where they already have a majority in parliament, the AfD was blocking democratic processes numerous times. The goal seems to be to hinder the government from functioning effectively, frustrate voters and therefore gather more votes in the future.

These poll results are a shame and really show the scale of frustration, misinformation and lack of education in the east. This is not easily fixable.

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 28 points 3 days ago

Russia is also funneling money to them so fast that it is as if they have a direct pipeline to Moscow.

It is quite easily fixable by finally banning that Nazi scum. Unfortunately those who hold the power to do so don't have a spine, and/or like to use the Nazis for stupid party political power games.

Well jeez, if only Germany had laws against Nazi parties.

Cowards and hypocrites.

Fascism - Capitalism in decay

We're speeding towards a new age of fascism in the western world.

We’re speeding towards a new age of fascism in the western world.

There are several more than worrying trends in the "Western world", but other countries are far ahead. Russia Is fascist, China turned to fascist rule, just to name two prominent examples.

What a delicious recipe for terrible world wars that kill billions -_-

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 26 points 3 days ago (2 children)

See this is what happens when your country doesn't periodically round up it's fascist and hang them. It's like spring cleaning for democracies. Every 30 years or so.

[–] shane@feddit.nl 18 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I mean, the assumption after the fall of the wall was that capitalism would magically make everything better. When that didn't, people become disgruntled. It's happening at a slightly slower pace everywhere in Europe.

Apparently we need to relive the 1930s again.

[–] RedPandaRaider@feddit.org 14 points 3 days ago

History is cyclical if there's no sufficient collective action to break a cycle.

[–] Ulvain@sh.itjust.works 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Except that only happens after the nazis round up and kill people, unfortunately
